Has there been any insight on why we didn’t sign Bassey? He looked like the best player on the summer league team for decent stretches and then didn’t play the last games but didn’t sign elsewhere? I know we’re all excited about Neemy, but curious why we wouldn’t have picked him up on a cheap deal.

Yeah, given what we saw, I’d rather have Bassey on a minimum than Tillman. But maybe as others said, he’s got better offers in Europe than a NBA minimum.

If Tillman was playing in the Summer League, he would probably be killing it as well. It doesn’t really mean much.

Remember a few year ago when everyone was so hyped about Mfiondu Kabengele because he had a crazy Summer League and then didn’t do anything at all when he made the roster ?

Alright, a couple things here.

The decision isn’t Tillman or Bassey, it’s Tillman and keeping a future 2nd round pick vs. Bassey.
Tillman would look like Jokic if he played in Summer League.

Bassey could still happen. There’s an open roster spot. They could make a 2 for 1 trade including say Simons and Tillman, which would open another spot.

Bassey might be in camp. The Celtics could use another big man. He’d be the best rebounder and shotblocker on the team.

Celtics currently have 15 players (ie, the maximum) on their roster. Someone like Jordan Walsh would have to be cut to add anyone.

Bassey probably has an offer - for the minimum - from the Celtics. And he probably has multiple offers from Euro clubs, for more than the minimum.

And that’s probably the reason: he can’t make money in the NBA, not as much as if he goes overseas.

We currently have 14 actually. And I think Bassey would’ve signed if he had a minimum on the table.

It is weird that Bassey hasn’t signed yet though, maybe he’s waiting for a Simons trade? Idk, I think they have the roster open in case they do a 2 for 1 Simons trade and/or the lower tax bill

But I don’t think your assumption is correct: it’s always about the money.

A non-guaranteed, two-year minimum contract in the NBA might not be better than a guaranteed, more than minimum one-year contract in Europe.

When Euro Basket ends, NBA camps are a few weeks away. Wouldn’t be surprised if Bassey waits for that window to make a decision.

I mean, you can “Bruh”, but he led the team in points, blocks, rebounds, and didn’t miss a free throw. Since we have an all-backup Center rotation, feels like he’d be a good option to include if at all possible.
