I don’t recall reading anyone predicting that. It was well known that because of the cap, Kornet was 100% gone and Al would only be back in the unlikely event he decided to take a huge discount and play for a team with JT hurt. A very unlikely scenario.

I specifically made a post about Kornet being gone and there was an abundant of commentors saying that he would re-sign with us cheap.

I also made a bunch of comments on other people’s post about how Kornet is getting signed to a team that isnt over the 2nd apron and I was repeated downvoted.

This was said in 2021 when we got stomped by the Nets because we were terrible and instead of doing the smart thing and just realising a Kemba, Langford, Tristan, Fournier team was doing nothing I think we actually added at the deadline. Nobody in 2025 would care that we ‘tanked’ because we might’ve a had Mobley, Barnes, Franz, Suggs etc.

That draft worked out well in salary dumping Kemba (and losing Sengun) to get Horford back, but if experimenting and losing a bit this season leaves us with a high lottery pick to help Tatum through his prime we would be so much better off in 2029.

Bad take. KG and Pierce were traded when they were in there late 30s for an insane haul. That insane haul turned into Tatum and Brown. There is nothing similar from that situation to the situation the team is in now.

Is it a 1 for 1 identical situation? No but for both teams they obviously need to look to try to gain some more assets or the future will be bleak. Dumb not even close. Celtics have been good through home grown talent for basically forever. Heat were good by attracting stars because of Miami’s fun nightlife and party scene. Plus Celtics are the winningest franchise and the heat aren’t even close. Their BS slogan is marketing, we just have results to show.

Lmao tatum and brown were both drafted. We traded for Derrick white. We traded for Garnett to form the big 4. We were a bad team and in turn got Larry bird. At which point in Celtics history or which era are u referring to in terms of “ we’ve always been good through home grown talent” bc we either tanked or traded for every major player in our history. I don’t know why u would want to stand on a hill that it’s a bad thing.

The final line is essentially the problem you actually don’t care about the teams future you just don’t want to be bored on Saturday nights for the next year

This roster could easily tank without really trying. Let’s say Brown gets injured for a 10 game stretch which the team goes 3-7 and they’re 9th place in the East. Are we rushing him back so they can try and get the 7th seed?

This is of course a large hypothetical but I could see something very similar happening. This is a thin roster and an injury or 2 could derail the season and at that point just let it go and try and get a better draft pick

Can be overrated. The Spurs were perennial contenders in the 90s, tanked for a year when Robinson was out, lucked into an all time great and built a decades-long dynasty where they were the epitome of this type “culture and ethic”, then all the good players left and they now haven’t been a winner for years. Miami won a title, then lost 67 games, then won another title over the course of seven seasons. The 2010s Lakers ended Kobe’s career on the worst two seasons in franchise history and were champs again 4 years later. Even the Celtics spent a decade mostly rebuilding, including two clear tank seasons, after decades of being the dominant team in all sports.

Teams with good players win, teams without good players don’t. So I agree that the tank condos are foolish, but that’s bc I think the roster’s too good for that even w/o JT, not bc I’m worried about what it’ll mean for the “culture” if they did suck

In my view, the organization may not fully understand what they have yet — and that’s okay. The key is to remain flexible. It makes sense to first evaluate the current roster, identify the team’s true identity, and allow the season to unfold naturally.

As we approach the trade deadline, the focus should be on maximizing the value of each player and assessing how they contribute to the overall system. Only then can meaningful decisions be made about the future.

With Jayson Tatum as the cornerstone, the team can begin shaping its long-term direction. Once he’s firmly in place and the roster is more clearly defined, we’ll have a much better sense of what this team can truly become — both for the remainder of this season and beyond.

Very true. At that point in time no one had any idea what to do. That was wild. We had so much young talent. Danny’s move was pretty revolutionary also. I Cant really recall another time when 2 stars were traded like this and an entire team was cleaned out and shored up by Vet mins and MLE type players. It happened a lot later on with Durant and Lebron but Danny kind of revolutionized that type of Roster constructing.

There’s a difference between wants/thinks/expects.

I wanted to keep Jrue + KP (if he could be healthy) as well as re-sign Horford + Kornet, but looking at the CBA penalties + cap situation + Tatum’s injury, they were easy no-brainer decisions.

After Tatum’s injury, even if we did everything we could and went all-in on this year, we’d still be crazy long shots for a championship this year relying on KP getting and staying healthy as well as Tatum being able to rush back for playoffs without a re-injury. However, this route would also mean we pay a crazy luxury tax (like $300M in tax for 1 year) and would start lose our first round draft picks in 7 years (when we likely need to add young talent to stay competitive at tail end of Tatum/Brown era).

I’d love a top lottery pick, but barring more injuries (that I’m not hoping for) we’re not that bad and the East is kind of weak. Our backup players getting an opportunity aren’t going to purposely tank and ruin their careers. I also don’t think our stars are the type to tank either (JB, DW, PP). Joe and Brad aren’t going to purposely tank. Again, we’re worse because they’re trying to get under the first-apron for more options and a luxury tax reset, but I don’t think we’re at the point of being worse than Hornets / Wizards / Nets / Bulls.

I think it’s just cuz the direction is really up in the air for the first time since Kyrie left (and even that was a pretty narrow window bc then we signed Kemba). There’s no obvious path to building back a team that has Jrue, Horford and KP caliber of players around the current team. trading one of brown/white and tanking is at least a tangible first step even if it doesn’t guarantee shit, otherwise it’s just like crossing your fingers and hoping Brad creates a bunch out stuff out of nothing- which might be the right path in the end I have no idea, but it definitely feels more nebulous

I love the Celtics, n been a huge fan my entire life, but if I’m being honest, Celtics fans have always been the softest in the city of Boston, then add on that reddit is mostly younger analytic obsessed nerds from the suburbs, so it’s always sunshine n rainbows on here. The reality is… despite our ring in 2024, we have lost 2 of our last 3 playoffs series to inferior teams.
