[Vasiljevic] “One night, I was in a hotel and said, ‘I don’t want to continue anymore.’ I’m not talking about basketball, but about life. There are moments when everything is so hard… I thought my life had no meaning,” Rubio said.
Ricky Rubio, the famous Spanish player, spoke to the media about the toughest moments of his career.
In 2023, he took a break from his basketball career after openly admitting he was struggling with mental health issues.
“One night, I was in a hotel and said, ‘I don’t want to continue anymore.’ I’m not talking about basketball, but about life. There are moments when everything is so hard… I thought my life had no meaning,” Rubio said.
He recalled the 2019 World Cup, when he won gold with Spain and was also the tournament MVP.
“If I look back at my career, I’m not satisfied because it was never enough. I wasn’t euphoric because, while receiving the award, I kept telling myself: ‘I’m a fraud, I don’t deserve this.’”
He also touched on Lamine Yamal, who, like him, received a lot of public attention at a young age.
“Responsibility is given to a child who may not yet be ready. It seems that just because you know how to play football, you’re expected to know how to handle everything. Are they coaching and preparing him for that?”
He emphasized that he will no longer give statements on this matter.
“In this interview, I exposed myself like never before. I won’t say anything more because I don’t want to be the center of attention.”
