Good rule change. To me it’s the equivalent of taking a shot attempt after a foul. If you miss it means nothing, if you make it it’s points. So there’s no reason not to go for the and-1.

I agree with others that it is fucking sad this is necessary, but seeing Jokic happily launch them from across half court without giving a fuck was so good, I want more fanbases to get a similar experience from their stars.

A lot of people were saying this is for “pussies” but I couldn’t really care less. NBA already has similar rules for shot clock violations being team turnovers. It will give us more buzzer beaters with basically no downside, rule just helps everyone tbh.

For example Jokic shot 41% from 3 with heaves and 44% without heaves. That 3% difference could impact someone’s next contract, which is another bonus to the rule change. (Also Jokic is a god wtf man)

Who’s going to have the biggest increase in heaves attempted from this change? KD?

Will stats be retroactively updated? Might bring Curry to 50/40/90 in some of the seasons where he missed.

I’m OK with this rule change because it helps role players too. Going ²⁄₆ versus ²⁄₅ from 3pt can alter the perception of how well a borderline rotation guy is performing.

This is a progressive rule change and one that I’m strongly in favor of. Efficiency is an important metric for players in a game that is heavily based around analytics nowadays so I never blamed them for not shooting those low percentage shots. This rule change should have been implemented years ago imo but better late than never.

As a fan of heaves, this seems like a good thing. It’s pretty boring when someone doesn’t even attempt to shoot because they’re scared of hurting their fg%

Sounds like a great change. Now most quarters should at least end with an attempt on the basket.

At the end of the day, rules are supposed to make the game better. And this rule makes the game better by incentivizing making the right play.

It’s kinda dumb that they need to do this to counter act players being so obsessed with their own stats on a micro level.

But also, the rule change doesn’t hurt anything and will lead to more fun half court heaves, that’s good by me haha

People are being too weird about this, heaves are exciting and this will encourage more of them. How is that ever a bad thing, who gives a fuck.

Okay I can understand this one but why only the first three quarters?!?I get that some of the shots at the end of the game are more “necessary” but sometimes they’re also just heaves.

But even more importantly why create a differentiation like that? Why not just say any shot from beyond half counts to team stats but not individual? How many dudes shoot from past half court other than “heave” style plays?!?

I remember a big profile on Shane Battier where he refused to do any buzzer heaves because it might affect his 3pt %. He was with Houston at the time and Morey even told him they don’t count those shots internally

I don’t understand how you can have more FGAs as a team than all the individual FGAs added together. Why not just treat them like misses on shooting fouls and pretend they didn’t happen at all?

I hope they count the made heaves as player FG. It could be annoying if they didn’t count even if you made them.
