Are you hoping that Al Horford stays with the team and what players in free agency should the team go after?
Any players come to mind that can help the team compete in the East while Tatum is out?
Honestly I’m fine if he just wants to chase a ring, he deserves it and there’s no point of keeping him in Boston on a bad-average team next year
Wish him the best but I will say he better get his ass straight back to Boston after he calls it quits and retires, he’s gotta be a part of this organizations front office or coaching staff after his playing career ends
Free agency is getting pretty thing, I mean the obvious one would be dame
Other than dame id love it if we could sign landale, he’d make a ton of sense
I kinda want him to join Denver. The Warriors make no sense cause I don’t think they have what it takes to make it out of the bloodbath that is the West and he would be needing to be a center that plays a lot of minutes. At least with the Nuggets he’ll be backing up Jokic or playing alongside him so it wouldn’t be as bad.
Staying with us just waste his chances to compete and I don’t want him doing that for us unless he doesn’t want to move his family and is willing to take a min
Ideally for my own interest he can play a year with another team and then come back home to us once Tatum is healed and we have a chance to compete again.
Honestly Jokic + Al would make me support Denver as my second/bandwagon team next year, that would be so fun to watch.
Rooting for Al and Jokic would be great. I’d sign up for that bandwagon ha
Nuggets fans are so annoying, but he would help them and I don’t want to see OKC win another ring.
Agree, Denver at least looks like a contender in the West next season while Warriors will only a waste of his time
They traded for Jonas to back up Joker already
Try google Jonas and tell me what you find
Damn my bad
I’m not mad if Al leaves. We won our ring. This will be a down year and he doesn’t have much left in the tank and will have even less left by the time Tatum returns.
I’d rather him retire a Celtic
He can still do that in a few years
He’d rather not play in down years, I’m Sure.
Team should let Horford go (he is my fav player, it hurts) and let our prospects play without any new signings. Maybe ship out Simmons for picks to get under the cap. Development of our existing assets is a good idea imo. A good investment.
That’s just my opinion.

I can see Al leaving…I can also see him returning when the team is back to 100%. Where he goes is what I’m curious about. While it’s definitely not like the Ray Allen situation, it’d feel very weird seeing Al play for a rival team. The Philly stint was weird, even if it ultimately came off as a form of sabotage.
I could also see him just hanging it up for this year, and leave the door slightly opened for next year.
how much longer do you think he is going to play.
I think Al has at least 1 more year of meaningful play…maybe 2. That being said I dont think it should be used for nothing.
Wherever he plays, I believe his time as a top 6 player on a team–from season opener to end of season–are over. Thinking of Vince Carter, there is nothing wrong with that at all. If there is a team that is a certified contender, I think he should go for it. He’d be of great value regardless.
I would rather he stayed, but it seems impossible now that we’re back over the second apron.
Al should go elsewhere
Al can go.
My love for him will never wane, but he’s not giving us anything at this point but leadership. And we aren’t contending anymore so he can provide much more value elsewhere and finish his career with value.
If he retires a Celtic I’ll be happy. If he retires a valuable piece of someone else’s journey I’ll be happy.
If he is a sixer or a heater I’ll be upset. But I’ll allow it.
I can see JB, DWhite Pritchard and Al taking pride in this team and hearing all of the talk about a “down year” and saying fuck it we’re making the playoffs. It makes sense if he goes, but I hope big Al stays
I agree with every thing you said.
No. Al’s needs and goals at this point in his career, last season, money or championship, are at odds with where the Celts are. It’s a bad fit for both.
welp
I’d love for him to stay. Warriors makes me wanna vomit. I think we will be a fringe top 5 team in EAST. The topic of Brad team’s overachieving has gotten me here, JB is still a stud. I dunno
Sign him to a 2 year deal, store him in the cryo chamber next year to take 5 years of wear and tear off, come back and win the title in 2027
not at all
i’m hoping they do everything necessary to tank this season and be ready to contend the year after
I hope he gets another ring. It won’t be with us
He is 40 and very near to retirement. The next season of this team, to be honest, is very far from being a contender. I think that I can accept the fact that he leaves there to chase a ring in another team next season. I just hope that he can come back in 26-27 season and help us get the banner 19.
i hope al does whatever he wants to. dudes in control of his life and i have nothing to do with it.
Al should go back to Atlanta
Why
From what i can see he’s looking at around \(5-\)6 million a year. Guy has earned nearly $300 million in his career so it can’t be the money. I really don’t get why he would uproot his family for what is likely low chance at the title. I wonder if this is more us not wanting him. I know we are looking forward and this will be a gap year, but this saddens me. I hope I’m wrong and he stays for the minimum and retires a celtic. I mean next year being a gap year is much worse for jb dwhite and pp who are in their primes right?
I’ll start by saying that, ultimately, I support whatever decision he makes. We each have to make the best decisions for ourselves that we can. That’s (part of) why I was never mad about Ray leaving for Miami, and that’s why I won’t be mad about whatever Al decides to do.
Having said that – personally, I really want him to stay. A Jaylen/White/Horford core is still a playoff team, and I want them to put the best players around these three as they possibly can for the next season, and make the deepest playoff push they can.
My free agency targets:
Oscar Tshiebwe,
Bismack Biyombo
Jonathan Kuminga
And then either:
Josh Giddey
or
Chris Paul
We’d plug some holes with experienced players, and be able to make a real playoff run. It would be a much more entertaining team to watch, than a bunch of rookies and/or bench pieces running around.
I have no opinion. I don’t know the details of their strategy for the next few years. If Al goes to GS, so long as Anna stays, we are fine.
Just go to Denver for a year and then come back to us
I’m fine if he wants to stay but also fine if he wants to chase a ring.
This season we should be a play-in team but we won’t be competing for a championship without Tatum. Horford probably doesn’t want to waste his last years only making it to the first round.
I hope Horford retires as a Celtic but I can’t be upset if he leaves. As far as free agents to target??? I don’t think there’s anyone of significance for a team next year out there lol.
As much as I’d love for him to stick around for 1-2 more years, even if it’s as a Udonis Haslem bench leader type role, I feel like he will find a championship level team to sign with. Al is the ultimate professional and is an asset to any contending team no matter what his role. Love him and that will never change, so whatever he chooses I’ll back it. Will miss him dearly if he leaves though ha
Im not. I also dont want him to waste his year here if we are not gonna contend, as painful as it sounds.
I love Al but time to move on.
I will feel about him the same as last time when he left to ring hunt. He went to a rival team to win more, and I was glad it was bad for him. It was sweet to rolling him in the first round of the play offs. Not mean spirited, just nice to see him face the consequences of his choices.
I have loved Al in Boston, but the Celtics are who I follow not the players. If he wants to be a mercenary then so be it, but I won’t root for him to win.
I won’t hate him either, but if/when he leaves hopefully it ends the asinine conversations about putting his number in the rafters.
The day the notification hits my phone that he’s no longer a Celtic is the day I die
I hope he goes and wins a ring with any team that is not the Lakers
Honestly I want him to do whatever he feels is best for him and his family
I think they’re trying to work out a sign and trade into a GS trade exception. I don’t full understand all the apron restrictions but I think GS has both a mid level and big TE.
I’m OK with Al going for one more payday and for chance to play in competitive situation regardless of team (except the Lakers and Heat).
I hope he wins a ring (not in LA) and hope he may come back to Boston next year with Tatum coming back (who knows maybe dame too)
Kinda sad Al might not be here anymore and didn’t get a proper farewell. Sort of felt like his number deserves to be retired but if he signs with another team forget about it
With all due respect for Al, his number shouldn’t get retired. Maybe it could have been retired if we were Hawks or Hornets but a massive franchise like the Celtics would run out of numbers eventually
I love the Celtics, but we’re kinda lax with our requirements for having a jersey retired to be honest lol. If Len Bias, a dude that never played a day for the Celtics, can have his jersey retired, so can Al Horford lol.
That was a sentimental thing that shouldn’t have happened. As such it shouldn’t justify another bad decision.
Not saying it should, but honestly, the Celtics have so many retired jerseys that would anyone really notice 42 in ten years lol
Why because our team’s gonna be bad next year and he should turn 40 and play his last year here?
I feel like he is kind-of leaving us high and dry for the 2nd time - both at our most recent lowest points. His family is engrained in the Boston community and he has always said how thankful he was to come back to Boston. We paid him well and he was able to compete for championships. He could have been sent to the Wizards. Look at poor Marcus Smart who would have died in a Celtics jersey if we let him.
Tatum has always said that Horford is his favorite teammate of all-time, not looking like that feeling is reciprocated. I’ll always be a Horford fan, but I find it somewhat odd he is so willing to up and leave tbh.
What should he do, play for $0 to stay with the team? Is that legal?
Brad said that his priority was to sign Luke and Al before FA began. I don’t think he meant for nothing. People can downvote me all they want, but Al wanting to leave is a slap in the face. He’s going to go across the country to play with the team that beat us in the Finals a couple of years ago and they have very little chance of winning anything. Like I said, I love Al, but dude isn’t particularly loyal.
I don’t think Al wants to leave. I think he’s trying to figure out if he wants to play one more season on a contender or hang them up. We aren’t a real contender as we sit today. He’s definitely not leaving us high and dry, we are dumping salaries and actively trying to save money. Him leaving last time didn’t feel great because it felt like a mass exodus of talent, this has been far different. The Celtics have been the driving force for the sell-off, and in my opinion, rightly so. Al going to chase a ring isn’t going to change my opinion of him at this point, he’s also not the 30 year old Al Horford anymore.
It seems like he wants to go to a team that will pay him the full taxpayer MLE. It’s not like the Warriors have any chance of winning anything. If a ring really mattered, he’d sign on with OKC, DEN, or HOU. Or stay in the East with CLE or NYK.
We are also at a phase where we desperately need veteran leadership and frankly just a Center in general. I still see Al playing two more seasons in order to get to 20, so this would be a good year to help give him a reset for one more big run next year. We aren’t actually tanking. We still have very good players on our team and I have no doubt that Brad very much still wants him on the team.
People are being much more understanding about this than I would have thought. Ray Allen still isn’t welcome in Boston and he only left us once.
