Yea, on the one hand we aren’t getting our heads chopped off or bombed, but on the other, it seems a bit ridiculous to be celebrating the 4th of July when our elected leaders have just chosen to cut taxes for the richest rich and pay for it by cutting off food assistance and health care to the poor, endangering rural hospitals and 1 in 4 nursing homes while also increasing the budget of the poorly trained often violent masked group that is abducting and disappearing people without due process nationwide to a number surpassing the budget of the fbi, dea, and randomly the Russias defense budget (while they are invading a country).
But I guess if people want to ignore that and go jerk off to the flag pretending it still means something while listening to shitty country music ballads and stuffing their gullets with hot dogs and shitty light beer, you do you

It’s all about perspective. I’m sure if you lived in a shitty communist country like I once did you’d appreciate what you have a lot more. It’s good that you guys have been privileged though, truly happy for you guys!
Yea i agree it is about perspective. Other places can suck, be worse and my country can also be making dramatic purposeful turns towards authoritarianism and dictatorial rule where the very few push the rest into poverty and steal from the nations future generations. Both can be true. Im assuming you came here for a reason. The values, opportunities and freedoms that you likely came here for are under attack and in a real danger of going away and for dumbest and most evil reasons. Im sorry you grew up somewhere actually hard, and you’re right the majority of people here probably still have more opportunity and better quality of life and def more stuff than the average person from Guatemala etc even with what is going on now, but thats not guaranteed or likely to continue and Id prefer for my country to continue to be a leader in something other than military might rather than death by a million cuts. What happened yesterday and today is a big departure from this goal. I take your point and I am privileged having grown up here, but I dont have to be starving without electricity and home plumbing and on the run from gangs to be able to mourn this blow to my country’s future and see the 4th of July as anything other than a bunch of idiots and malicious individuals trying to ignore reality and party on the deck of the titanic as the last life boats leave.
