He helped us win a ring, was essentially the first major free agent to sign with us since the 08 Big 3 left, and is 40 next year.

We aren’t competing and we can’t offer him more money. This is a final chance to get a payday and maybe compete for a ring. And everyone in here is shitting on him.

I’m not mad at him. I understand why and considering we just shipped off Jrue and KP, we can’t expect the same loyalty from our players

Yeah definitely no grudge or hard feelings against Al - he’s earned the right to do whatever he wants with the last year or two of his career.

Worst I will say is that he was getting to borderline Jersey retirement territory and signing somewhere else would be a nail in that coffin.

I don’t feel as strongly as I did when the Lakers rumors dropped. If he did that I think he’d lose a lot of good grace he has here. Not to like Ray Allen levels when that happened, but going to the franchise rival that’s not even a contender would rub a lot of fans the wrong way.

The Warriors is also not a great feeling but the animosity of that rivalry is not quite the same since we won the chip. It would absolutely rule out any chance of his number being retired though. For sure puts a stain on his reputation as a Celtic. Leaving once for the Sixers was already rough but it was after the Kyrie year and he came back and was so incredible for us these past years. Leaving again when he can retire Celtic, he won’t really be able to make up to get his jersey retired for unless he comes back in another year and wins another chip.

You’re absolutely right that maybe we just moved on, though Brad noted in his press conference that he wanted him back, he could always just be doing GM talk. It’s also understandable for him to go a team like the Warriors while we reset, but I’m talking about how it reflects in chances of him getting his number retired. Otherwise going to the warriors is a move most Celtics fans will find reasonable.

Going to the Lakers would’ve been a different story imo. Again not that it’d turn the fanbase against him, but at least for me it would’ve been tough to see him go that route.

We definitely gave both Horford and Kornet an offer.

Right after the first round of the draft, Brad Stevens had an interview where he listed re-signing both big men as a priority for Boston.

“I think the biggest thing is, as you look at the rest of the team and what we’re trying to do, there is no question our priorities would be to bring Al and Luke back,” said Stevens via CLNS Media. “Those guys are huge parts of this organization. They’re going to have, I’m sure, plenty of options all over the place, and that’s well-deserved.”

“But I think that would be a priority,” added Stevens. “At the same time, I don’t want to put pressure on them, it’s their call, ultimately. But we would love to have those guys back.”

Kornet getting full MLE money kinda screwed us there, I think we were prepared to offer him closer to the TMLE.

We wouldn’t be a tanking team if we manage to keep Horford.

We’d actually have a decently competitive roster if he’s available. Not perfect, likely not a title contender, but we’d have a capable 8-9 man rotation, which a chance some of the young guys break out.

As far as the CBA is concerned, Al is free to sign with any team he wants regardless of their cap situation as long as it’s for a vet-minimum and they have a roster spot. Obviously is takes two to tango so only a few teams make sense, but nothing in the CBA would stop a deal.

Al seems like a thoughtful guy who keeps a close-knit camp who wouldn’t blab about where he’s going. I’m not sure the media has a read on what he’s doing the way they think they do. When Al first came to Boston, Woj initially and incorrectly reported that Al was heading to the Wizards. Al signing with the Sixers was a bit of a shock. Not saying he’s not going to the Warriors, and I’d be surprised if he came back to the Celtics, but I would be wary of taking the media’s word as gospel on this one.
