My buddy was watching the Boston marathon in Brookline with his Celtics hat on. Not paying attention he hears a guy say “wanna see something cool?” and a fist with a giant 08 ring appears under his nose. My buddy looks up in surprise and it’s Wyc, running the marathon, who stopped more or less just to show the ring off to a dude with some gear on

He was the owner when they won in 2008.

Wyc has been very visible since the Pierce days. Sat courtside, and never shied away from interviews even from shows like Felger and Mazz who overtly criticize the team and try to present a negative slant on most things by rule.

yea i’ve been a STM since 2007 and hes been basically the same (from a fans point of view) since. Always at the games, always cheering the team and taking an active role. The only change was who he was married to.

And while not that old, let me assure you that making sure ALL the kids and grandkids are taken care of is usually the goal. All of the Grousbeck heirs have been generously provided for, and taxes paid for them, via this sale.

Irv Grousbeck was the second-best owner the Celtics ever had? Maybe?

“Fuck Irv” is emotionally satisfying but it’s not fair. He paid all the taxes. He raised this team from where it was to where it is.

It’s sad Wyc doesn’t have a blank checkbook from Irv anymore. Hopefully Chisholm doesn’t suck.

But that’s no reason to “fuck” the guy who actually paid the money for that title.

Lmao cmon man, he funded the franchise for the past couple decades and was generally always willing to spend. He’s now decided to cash in and set his family up for generations in a more concrete way than having the team. 

I understand why this would be someone’s initial, emotional reaction but to be fair to Irv, we’re not talking about I few million dollars. I believe that by selling the team they will save an estimated $800 million in a state taxes.

If you want to blame someone, blame the gluttonous politicians down on Capitol Hill, who spend like drunken sailors and then come up with vehicles like the estate tax, which taxes money that has already been taxed once, in order to bail them out.

I know most of the Celtics fans would have liked to see Horford retire as a Celtic. But Tatum’s injury really changed the equation. Celtics are definitely not contending next year, and Horford unfortunately doesn’t have a 2 year shelf life left. So, even if I don’t give a damn about billionaires’ money, it makes good sense to try and drop out of the repeater tax penalities to preserve monetary flexibility after JT comes back.

This does not preclude Horford coming back to Boston a couple years later as a culture guy (although I don’t think he would).

I don’t blame the ownership on this one, the timelines just diverged the moment JT got injured.

This is such an asinine and moronic comment and the butt-hurt reaction afterwards is classic failure to acknowledge that they probably should’ve just kept quiet.

This is not an issue with the ownership group specifically. This has everything to do with the fucking CBA, that, by the way, the PLAYERS voted to ratify. The same thing will happen to every contender, including the Thunder, for as long as the current CBA is around.

Even assuming someone was willing to pay a billion in taxes - and not even Steve Ballmer, who makes a billion in dividends alone per year, was willing to do that because of the massive basketball penalties. The team would’ve gotten old and broken down with no relief and would have eventually stunk like it did in the 90’s.

Do a little fucking research before you open your yap, buddy. That is the problem with giving people like you a platform to share opinions: you say crap like this that makes the rest of us want to tear our eyes out.

Wyc is still chairman which means he’s still involved in the decisions.
