Am I crazy to think that we should be keeping Hauser? Isn’t he the exact type of role player a championship contending team wants on their roster and not to mention on his type of contract!

Granted this year is a gap year, but come next season we back in contention.

$10.8 mil over the next two season each — that is some really good value. Brad really cooked with this extension.

Given his 3pt percentage, age and the fact he isn’t some turnstile on defense I’m thinking in today’s NBA Hauser should fetch at least 1 unprotected 1st, maybe 2, or the 2nd one can have some protections on it.

Hope we don’t move Hauser and if we do hope we just don’t give him up for less if return because we have to duck the tax. Two years from now we’ll be wishing we had a player like Hauser off the bench.

I’ve been going back and forth on Hauser so much lately lol

I think I’ve come to the conclusion that that 10mil, (though cheap), is better used to solidify our center position.

I’m not necessarily talking about this year, but in future years, (next year more specifically). If any one of Scheierman, Walsh, Minott, Hugo, etc can prove to be a viable 7th man as a wing player, then Hauser is expendable.

If we want to contend next year, while potentially staying under the tax, it’s going to be done by one of those guys taking Hauser’s spot in the rotation and Hauser’s money being moved to other places in our starting lineup, (either a guard or a center).

Not only that, but if we are staying under the tax next year too, it’s better for us to have a 10-15mil player on the bench at the ⁴⁄₅ than a 10-15mil player on the bench at the wing. Centers, by nature of the position, tend to be more injury prone. So you almost need a starter level back-up nowadays.

Exact same boat.

The other thing is that we probably want to sell high on Hauser a little bit. He hasn’t performed at a playoff level and we’ve been fortunate that no one else seems to have noticed.

But then again, it is a really good contract and he’s still been a big part of our success.

Yeah the back issues last year worry me.

His ability to stay strong and upright while moving laterally is what lets him be a good defender and such a high value player. If he loses some of that and can’t stay in front of guys without fouling it becomes a lot harder to play him big minutes.

The other counterpoint here is that, because we won’t be a tax team, keeping Hauser next year could make sense for salary matching purposes.

New CBA makes trading for more talent easier. For example, Hauser + 2.5mil matches a player making 20mil

I still lean toward trading Hauser, but even making that decision, “when” is still up in the air

I think we don’t have to rush the decision. Hauser had a rougher year last year cause of the nagging injuries but when he was right he was still a rock solid playoff rotation guy that gave you positive mins. We’ll have up until the deadline to really evaluate Hauser and Simons and some of the young guys/trial guys to get feel for who’s got value and what or roster is really made of.

I do think Niang is the guy that will get moved regardless. He is who he is, just doesn’t have a long term fit here. Better to just evaluate the younger players to see if you have anything in them.

I will say that Hauser/Niang block Hugo/Baylor from getting real accelerated growth minutes. If the team isn’t going to be a title contender this season I’d rather advance the upside play of both these guys.

He’s so efficient I think he definitely could handle a bigger load… he’s not going to handle the ball or anything so it’s really just increased minutes w the same role (and maybe a few more sets for him). If anything would help him bc guys need rhythm

You’re not crazy but you also should try to understand that there is real merit to the idea that it might be time to move on

If the plan is to stealth tank next year and develop some young guys Hauser could fetch us some assets and free up time for Hugo Walsh minott and scheirman

To be clear though, if we were gonna trade him I think it would’ve made way more sense at the draft, but if we could snag another 2026 first off someone and cap relief for Hauser I’d be down

Yeah I mean if we can get another first in next years draft that will allow us to pair it with our pick and move up or go get someone, then yeah do it.

But hopefully we don’t just accept some lesser return just so we can duck the tax. Feel like there are other ways of getting that done, like moving Simons at the deadline.

Niang was acquired as a contingency for that role. I’m positive that the team will move Simons/Niang before him, if possible. But Hauser has real value. They won’t dump him for cap.

Trading him for something valuable is a discussion, but dumping Hauser now would be dumb. He was the emergency option in case the Celtics were struggling to move Jrue and KP and/or clear the second apron, and there’s an argument his money would have been better spent on Kornet. But those ships have sailed and he’s still here, better off keeping him.

Yep, I am in agreement. Even Tatum, while not a real 4, adds a lot of length. We may be getting destroyed in the paint and on the boards next year if we don’t address our need for a big. But I also don’t think we can get a serviceable starting center on Hauser money.
