I’m trying so hard not to get too excited about him… but is anyone else overly excited for hugo?

Idk man I just can’t unsee it now, like it this not just a Marcus smart-pilled 19 year old with insanely good physical measurements? 6’6+ in shoes, super long wingspan and super big hands, strong as a bull and extremely high motor/pretty athletic. On top of all this, plays smart offensively, good rebounder/passer and has solid shot mechanics…

Like I’m truly trying to hamper expectations here but I can’t unsee it, like tell me this isn’t bigger/longer/more explosive/better shooting Josh hart some day? I won’t listen

What are your thoughts after seen the film? Honestly he feels like a fifth starter to me, I can’t think of a better wing to slot in between the jays as they enter their late 20s than a super high motor powerful work horse like Hugo, let them save their energy for offense

Worst case scenario I can’t see a world where he isn’t at least a role player

To be clear personally this isn’t a yearly thing, I don’t usually get this excited over our draft picks, honestly the last one I was overly excited for was rob williams because I thought he was a crazy good steal, haven’t been a huge fan of our late firsts/seconds since before Hugo

Hugo seems to have everything you’d want in a player off the court, and he’s only 19. If he can use his seemingly strong work ethic to improve, he could be a steal for us at 28

Personally I say enjoy it while it lasts, but have reasonable expectations when the teams start playing. It’s very easy to disappointed that Player X isn’t everything we wanted them to be. Hell, I have a long list of could have beens and I can say unequivocally they add nothing positive to my life.

watched some film of him. his jump shot does not look nba ready. he’s a good cutter and thats all the rage in the nba now so maybe he gets a shot? I thought they’d keep him there for a year to save money.

All his experience in playing with and teaming with older pros should pay off quite early here… I hope in the 26-27 season.

Yeah to build on that; the reason I think his experience in particular playing against grown men and pros will translate right away, his role was to be a defensive energy motor guy and he was very good at it and held up well. It’s not one of those scenarios where a guy holds up offensively as a scorer but there body isn’t far enough along to defend in the nba, he doesn’t have those questions and should get on the floor at least because of his body being nba ready and by having a super high motor

I’ve really enjoyed his tape, watching from all kinds of euro tournaments the last few years. All commentators in all those tourneys were gushing about him and calling him the star of the team/tournament in real time.

I’m drinking the Kool-Aid. My excitement and expectations for Hugo are a high ceiling somewhere between a young Luka and Kobe in terms of a draft pick. He is 19 and played on a strong international team. Same one as Luka and was drafted as an 18 / 19 year old like Luka and Kobe. They are all 6’6, highly skilled, athletic, and competitive. Hugo, Luka, and Kobe. All 1-name recognizable.

Like if he pans out somewhere in that Josh hart/braun type player/role that would be perfect, we desperately need a high energy guy slotted in with a core like that because those 3 can carry our offense on their own to a top 3 offense in the league if they’re afforded the energy to do so

I mean if you wanna see a world where he isn’t at least a role player, look at Jordan Walsh. Every reason to be excited about Hugo is also true of Walsh. With that said, I’m still in. I really value the fact that he’s been playing with grown men for several years already. Idk I just get a good vibe from him all around.

It’s okay to get excited, he seems pretty talented for someone we picked so late. Draft experts all said it was a good pick and a few said it was a steal. We need something to be excited about next season, because it is going to be pretty jarring compared to what we are used to.

It’s more likely he’s ends up back in Europe than becoming a role player on a good team. If he’s a 15-20 minute per game guy that’s a great outcome.
