Spike: “I would give up an Academy Award. Oscar, for the Knicks to win a Championship.” Chuck: “Well you’re gonna keep ‘em!”
This is why we love him
Chuck is the funniest when hes hating with sarcasm and just messing around.
But when he starts getting all serious, even tho he admit it he dont watch the game anymore, thats where it gets annoying.
He was right about the Lakers in spite of not watching the games lol.
Lmao it was literally a broken clock situation there. Dude picked against the Lakers during each round of their title year.
The logic he used this season was right tho.
Lakers had a good stretch and everyone was thinking they were title contenders, this sub was clowning him for saying ppl are jumping the gun.
I wasn’t. I knew that people were silly thinking that obtaining Luka meant an automatic championship
It was weird watching the narrative change in real time.
To me, it felt like the Luka trade was much more about future title runs (duh) and the post LeBron Lakers. Did I expect them to win the finals this year? Absolutely not, but the addition of Luka made it much more feasible in my eyes, which obviously didn’t work out lol.
Massive acquisitions mid-season rarely work out like that, and I’ll probably feel the same going into next season depending on what the roster looks like. It gives you a punchers chance at a title run every season, but it doesn’t necesssirly guarantee finals appearances and championships.
When they rescinded the Mark Williams trade everyone should’ve known we were cooked. I think we’ll be in a better situation in the future having not given up Knecht & 1st+swap, but it absolutely killed hopes at contending in these playoffs. People really thought Jaxson Hayes had magically turned a corner…
Motherfucking god damnit I can’t believe Luka is gone dude. Fuck me I feel like I got divorced or something lmao.
But you got flagg now,if kyrie recovery well, you will be strong championship chaser
Yes, and Flagg could be very very good, but it just feels like starting over for no reason when it truly feels like the Mavs could have competed for a championship this year. But you are right, getting Flagg has at least let me consume basketball media again without wanting to jump off a bridge. Lol
somethin somethin broken clock
Imma get downvoted
But people who don’t like Chuck bc of his basketball takes are the most annoying part of r/nba. I know internet isn’t real life which is why I don’t see these people irl.
But seriously, “annoying” is hilarious. Show me good basketball analysis on tv and I’ll admit I’m wrong.
He’s there for entertainment and he’s been consistently entertaining every time I watch him.
Also not to go at you, just seems like the type of comment I see way too much of
I think people that preface their comments with “they’re gonna downvote me for this, but” are way more annoying
It’s the egregious takes we don’t like, like the consistent disdain for Lebron. Barkley in 2017, after KD joined the warriors and LeBron wants a backup PG: “he wants all the good players, he don’t wanna compete?”. Well, hes going up against the most stacked team ever, so yeah it’s not crazy for him to ask for a backup PG when Kyrie sits.
Then, okay, LeBron goes a little too hard and eviscerates him in his response by bringing up Barkley’s past, but the YouTube comments are more hilarious to me about how y’all d ride Chuck. “Barley didn’t bring up personal matters and kept it to basketball”, come off it.
Lebron was completely right to go off at Barkley abt that and Shaq was 100% right to check him in that conversation.
Chuck made it personal when he said Lebron doesn’t want to compete.
I don’t think Chuck hates Lebron as much as people think. Around Halloween he was saying Lebron is the only player he’s ever seen to come out of highschool and dominate, basically giving him his flowers. But that conversation abt Lebron not wanting to compete was peak Chuck hating.
Is it really giving him his flowers when it’s factual? It’s not like there’s a large history of guys who came out of highschool and had dominant first seasons. Stoudemire was good but their first seasons aren’t really even close.
My writing doesn’t really do it justice. Obviously it’s a fact that Lebron was great out of highschool, but Barkley seemed quite complimentary, in tone, of him and it was good to see.
100 percent agree. This sub is so hypocritical. You bums have no moral or mental highground. This sub in general is dumber than the people it clowns. Don’t even get me started on the double standards
Any time you see a public figure getting made fun of on reddit, you can be 99% certain that the person doing the insults is dumber than the person being insulted.
I don’t watch the games either, so it’s fine with me.
Kenny looks so disappointed in him LOL
It’s almost as fast as the
“Hakeem, Hakeem Olajuwon used to say this to me all the time–” “–Kenny, bring me some water”
“Hakeem, Hakeem Olajuwon used to say this to me all the time–”
“–Kenny, bring me some water”
Bro had PTSD
Lol immediately crushing his dreams
Chuck: Crushing dreams like Taco Bell.
Man you just got me thinking about their chili cheese burritos. Horrible decision to remove that item from the menu. Loved those.
What was the name of the burritos with the spicy Fritos in them?
Beefy Crunch Burrito I think? Sounds right.
Good news - it’s coming back sometime this year: https://www.masslive.com/entertainment/2025/03/taco-bell-to-add-new-spicier-version-of-beefy-crunch-burrito-to-2025-menu.html
Humble brag by Spike
(I got two)
Oscars, Erneh
[deleted]
In fairness, the Academy knew that if Black Klansman won, they’d essentially be handing the Knicks a championship.
NYKKKlansman
Now I’m imagining a blue and orange robe color way and my man’s has timbs on
I’ve been sayin this since I saw the trailer for that movie
the academy are Laker fans
That’s why Kobe won for that short.
Haven’t watched Green Book but Black KKKlansman is ok but not Oscar worthy. The Favourite was the better choice.
Lee should have got one for Do the Right Thing instead of the Academy picking Driving Ms Daisy but they love stories about black and white people driving each other.
The Favourite was by far the best movie of that year’s nominees. Wouldn’t have minded if Roma won either though it was a bit too artsy and abstract for my tastes.
Roma is beautiful, but it’s boring. Very boring. Like, my favourite trilogies are the Three Colours trilogy and the Before trilogy from Richard Linklater. I like boring films, and even I found Roma hard to get through. But it looks fantastic.
Spike Lee losing out to Driving Miss Daisy and Green Book is pretty funny actually wow
He didn’t even lose out to Driving Miss Daisy, Do The Right Thing wasn’t even nominated for Best Picture or Director.
Not even being nominated for DTRT seems worse lol
I thought the Green Book was excellent. Mahershala Ali and Viggo are really great in it.
Both those movies were mediocre
That movie is peak Oscar slop
Malcolm X is his masterpiece.
He should have like 5, 3 at least for Do The Right Thing (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay)
Shoutout Oliver Stone though, directed the shit out of Born on the Fourth of July
No shoutouts to Driving Ms. Daisy though that movie is ass
“One mediocre oscar bait should have won over the other mediocre oscar bait!”
He should lose at least 5 for the atrocity that was 2K16 MyCareer.
Both were just ok, for different reasons
Black KKKlansman would still not be deserving of the Oscar even if Green Book didnt win.
Driving Miss Daisy over Do the Right Thing is infinitely nastier business
Nah his 3rd should have been for the legendary tale he conjured up in 2k16 when we were all moved by all the Freqin’ and vibin’ and devastated upon Bo$$Key Yacht’s passing.
one is honorary though.
You gonna give up your screenplay award for Blackkklansman?
Utah! Get me two…
He honestly should have more.
He has every right to brag
If I won an Oscar I’d be telling everyone at every minute
I would fashion mine into a giant necklace like Flava Flav
Crazy how he is simultaneously an all time award snub and still has 2 to toss around
Do The Right Thing not even nominated while DRIVING MISS DAISY won lmao
Yo Sal how come there ain’t no brothers’ films nominated at the Oscar’s?
The other time he was in contention he lost to Green Book…in his own words, they just switched the car’s seating arrangement, lmao
Edit: Found the clip
Thanks for sharing—that’s a great clip
He’s so sassy here.
Do the right thing literally was nominated for an Oscar. It was nominated for “Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen” in 1990.
Assuming they meant Best Picture lol. Being nominated for that has wayyy more prestige
That was precisely why he said it lol.
I guess I missed the humble part
“Eh, take the honorary one.”
Bro is dressed like that and you’re saying it’s only “humble”??
Words dont mean anything anymore. There wasn’t anything that was humble in there. Thats fine, just dont call it a humble brag.
Chuck: “I would give up an Academy Award for that street meat!”
And two for extra white sauce
god i fuckin love street meat
dog cat rat
doenst matter
Possum
We got ‘em.
I’m a Malaysian so mostly out foods are halal. If I’m ever in New York, I’ll eat them coz they’re call halal cart but regardless of its name, is it really that good?
Streets of San Antonio
This level of loyalty to a team is both crazy and commendable. I hope he sees Knicks win again (I’m assuming he saw them win in 1970 and 1973 since he was 13⁄16 at that time) in his lifetime.
This is so weird to read as an European fan. Here (in football or any other sport really) we are stuck with other teams.
You can change your wife, your politics, your religion, but never, never can you change your favourite football team. - Eric Cantona
I think he means that Spike has sat court-side and been a huge fan through many many years of terrible basketball. He is synonymous with the Knicks like Jack Nicholson is with the Lakers.
As opposed to someone like Drake who hasn’t been seen hyping up the team and crowd at Raptors games since their championship run.
weird example since Drake was just in controversy last season for beefing with Demar at a game. He’s there pretty regularly even in our trash seasons
Yea I feel like the critique of Drake isn’t how legit his Raptors fandom is, and more the fact that he’s always trying to hang out with champions regardless of who they are. I mean the dude has a Steph Curry tattoo after yall played them in the finals lmao
Does he still use his office?
Drake’s presence as a fan at games has always been about Drake and never about the team or his fandom
Drake? You mean wheel chair Jimmy?
I dont think he’s talking about changing teams? He’s admiring the dedication to giving up lifetime achievement awards for his team to win a chip…
I think his point is that you said it’s commendable. But they would never think about changing teams, so it’s normal to them. Basically calling us bandwagoners, which is fair comparably
The level of commitment is probably what he means. Most people stick with their hometown teams but don’t care this much
I don’t think they’re praising Spike Lee for remaining a Knicks fan. Loyalty here refers to someone who has been a die hard Knicks fan even when they were dogshit. Not fading out even the slightest bit when people were wearing paper bags to games.
Europeans have bandwagoners like we do. Spike is a Knick lifer, like you’re talking about.
What I find amazing is the team you are dealt at birth (I mean the one your family that has followed since the 1830s) may be a team from a 4th tier league, that is owned by the local rich guy who has car dealerships and hasn’t seen success since the Beatles were popular.
Yet you walk the 7 mins to the ground, buy the beer, eat the microwaved dogs and call the manager a prick even through he lives three doors down from you.
And if there is even a SNIFF that the team is relocating, you damn right are going out there with your cricket bats and bowler caps asking questions.
That’s the level of football fandom I admire.
The regionalness in European football is deeper, I think. The teams with the most rapid fanbases in the states are either teams SUPER ingrained into the local culture (NY, Boston) , or fans who have literally nothing else (Indy)
The cope for me is that the lows will make the hopeful highs so much sweeter.
And that’s actually been true. I’ve rooted for the Mets and Knicks (and Jets but… Yeah…) for over a quarter century and I always treasure every run because I know how rare they can be.
Spike is fortunate enough to probably have seen the last Knicks championships but a lot of bad has happened since then. Plus NYC loves it’s hoop and their Knicks.
I’d trade a whole bunch to see a ticker tape parade for my squads. Maybe one day…
Good god you got the child abuse trifecta
My dumbass fault for deciding not to be a Yankees fan when I’m from the Bronx
There is time to correct the wrongs of the past brother
I just can’t, man. Something’s been hard wired into me and I just don’t feel the same about any other team.
Its all well worth it, I am a Giants fan and I am still riding high even though it was 14 years ago, If we miss on draft picks its all good, if we dont get back in the next 10 years its all good, just experiencing one(two) in my lifetime is good to me
How the Raps 2019 championship feels.
I always treasure every run because I know how rare they can be.
This is why rings culture is so wack IMO. If you just go by rings, there’s only been like 50 teams/cores in league history worth talking about. But post-season runs can be just as magical and meaningful, even if they end in defeat. 29 teams lose every year, but that doesn’t mean the season was completely pointless for all but that winning team.
That’s a loyal fan
Hope he gives one to Shaq if we somehow pull it off.
Erasing the Kazaam snub from decades ago
truly, doing the right thing
Why bring Sinbad into this?
Chuck always lets his intrusive thoughts win, he’s enlightened
If he is truly enlightened, are trh thoughts really intrusive?
That’s prob the closest realistic thing to giving up a limb to an injured player.
No it’s not
Everyone has limbs, not everyone has Oscar’s. Checkmate.
Oscar ain’t gonna wipe my ass
It could but you’re gonna need limbs too
you gotta pay extra for cleanup.
Robert Downey Jr has limbs and an Oscar. We are worms compared to him 😞
oh ok nvm
Spike can say that because he ROLLING in them
Well, apart from two particular instances lol
Driving Miss Daisy?!?!?!
Oh my god puke. Cannot believe he lost to that sludge.
Surprisingly no. Just the one for Best Adapted Screenplay for Blackkklansman. Famously snubbed for a directing nomination for Do the Right Thing in 89 and Malcolm X in 92
He has one lmao
I’ve heard he has two
One is a lifetime achievement award which isn’t really the same as the competitive awards
I don’t know, an Oscar specifically rewarding YOUR contributions to film, sounds a lot better than “oh yeah, Timothy Huttons supporting actor role”. Like not having respect for an Oscar awarding a LIFETIME of achievements in film is crazy
I agree but typically honorary awards are not seen in the same light as the competitive awards unfortunately. For example David Lynch is often talked about as having never won an oscar despite still having an honorary oscar. Spike getting robbed for DTRT and not even getting nominated for Malcolm X is insane
Ok, I understand, you mean societal implications. I’m with you, Malcolm X was incredible.
I didn’t know Malcolm X didn’t get a nomination, that’s insane.
Well it’s a little misleading. The official Academy website distinguishes between the two- it’s actually not called an honorary “Oscar”, it’s called the Honorary “Award” (previously the “Special Award”. And you do get a statue, but you don’t have to meet any eligibility requirements.
I kind of think it’s like coaches and the Olympics. Was Steve Kerr a gold medal winning coach? Well, not officially, because coaches don’t get medals, but he coached the team that won gold. It’s a nitpick in wording, if anything
Honestly, I’ve learned so much Oscar lore from you guys
It’s very odd! I was trying to think of a better analogy- maybe playing for a team for a couple games and then getting a World Series ring even though you didn’t play in the playoffs? Like you HAVE the trophy, but in a different way than everyone else
Jackie Chan has the same career Honorary Oscar (Award) that Spike Lee has.
More reason why some feel a competitive one means so much more. However, I’m not in their shoes. For all I know they’re damn proud having any Oscar statue in their house with their name on it.
“oh yeah, Timothy Huttons supporting actor role”
I’m curious why you picked the youngest to ever win the award (20y) out of all the ones you could have gone with
At the first ceremony, there was a general acknowledgment that Chaplin would sweep five categories for Modern Times, so he wasn’t nominated and was instead given a special award/commendation. Of course, part of the reason Chaplin didn’t sweep was him, as a founding partner at United Artists, not being there for Louis Meyer’s vanity project for studios to maintain leverage over the screen actors guild. Another reason was that the ceremony took fifteen minutes, with the intent of dropping some baubles into the room and leaving them to themselves.
So he has two you’re saying
That may be so… but Ernie stacks paper to the ceiling and rides on 24 inch chromes
He gonna keep all of them. At least he was around for all their Championship wins!
When did he start dressing like Willy Wonka?
He’s dripped tf out. Don’t criticize
Facts
Knicks colors nothing he can do.
Dressed like Willy Wonka with the body of an oompa loompa
He just has a lot of team spirit.
Well he was sitting a couple of seats over from Chalamet
I have to think Lee would even entertain that thought because his lone professional in-competition Oscar was a consolation award for best adapted screenplay for BlacKkKLansman. If he won an Oscar for Do the Right Thing or Malcolm X, no way he’d say that.
i support this take.
Did him like Radio Raheem.
Why does the Knicks get the best celebrity fans man.
You guys got Jack Nicholson and Jack Black
Nicholson probably still think they have Westbrook
The Co-Stars of Mars Attacks?
Jack Nicholson is a piece of shit
Because they usually live in the largest metro area in the US
I honestly think because of Madison square garden. Too iconic of a venue. Too much history in that building. It goes beyond basketball.
Jimi Hendrix to Sabrina Carpenter, everyone has had an impact on that floor.
My first ever concert in NY was Fleetwood Mac in the garden. Saw the cure there, rage against the machine, Tyler the creator, creed. Skrillex/Fred Again, Jack Ü. Bands all over the world want to play the garden, and ball players all throughout time have wanted to make a name for themselves there as well.
And in spite of all legends who have passed through there, it’s home to the Knicks and Billy Joel.
It’s in my opinion, the most iconic American venue.
I’ve been to Miami, Dallas, Staples Center, DC, the Barc, Wells Fargo, Nola’s, and Atlanta’s stadiums.
None of them compare in my homer opinion. The bowl seating, the theatre-style lighting (The crowd is shrouded in darkness), the energy, the elation of leaving after a win.
MetLife stadium is legitimately the opposite
Feel like it’s being a while since I heard chuck have a good one.
I dunno, him earlier in the game saying he was going to hell had me rolling lol
Never ever change Chuck!
Unpopular opinion I think but I love spike.
I was coming home from work once waiting for an uber, I saw spike taking out his garbage and I said hi and he said hi back. I didn’t realize who he was til after the exchange was over
I’m a knicks fan and my buddy lived in a very high end condo building in the early 2000s we were young teens, spike was downstairs throwing a football with his kid, we stopped to say hello. Guy was a total dick and told us to get lost, adults sure but we were 12⁄13 and just wanted to say hi
I’m a fan. Incredible artist + diehard sports fan. Super authentic and charismatic.
It makes me happy to know that the basketball hall of fame has him in there as a superfan. It was way overdue.
Ladies & Gentlemen, I present the 2025 Hater’s ball award winner: Charles Barkley.
What can be said about Spikes’ suit that hasn’t been said about Afghanistan? It looks bombed out and depleted.
Hate! Hate! Hate! Hate!
i dunno – i kinda wish it was Reggie that said that, instead of Chuck…
Do the right thing!
Say all of them, Spike!
Chuck does not give a fuck🤣
The Knicks don’t even deserve his Oscar nomination for Do the Right Thing let alone the real statue
Bet he would only give away his honorary Oscar and not the one he won for screenplay.
he loves basketball so much he dresses like one
Chuck lmao
Spikes been at it for decades…spike deserves a knick champion more than the Knicks…
If you can find it, ESPN 30 for 30 “Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs the Knicks” is a great doc on the 2004 EC finals series.
Edit found the link.
I am so confused. I feel like I’ve heard ‘the last Inside the NBA’ episode so many times yet it’s still on. Which I’m thrilled about, but also very confused.
I believe the last one from the Atlanta studio is over. They are on the road now.
Chuck just cursed the Pacers
Spike dressed like he just got off the set of Malcolm X
I will never forgive Spike Lee for what he did to NBA 2k16
i feel the chuck curse kicking in with this comment
Shaq is fcking huge
Every time chuck talks shit on the knicks they win, I hope he never stops
Knicks should hang a banner for Spike.
Spike Lee is the best Knicks fan!
If the knicks win the ship. Spike should give the Oscar to chuck
At the end of the day, Chuck is still that guy who said “take that shit off the windows” back in the day and it shines in moments like this 🤣
Charles “too quick with it’ Barkley
spike lee game day fits never disappoint
And that’s why I named my cat Chuck 15 years ago 🤣🤣
Shaq is fucking HUGE
Looking like a Batman villain
Charles Barkley as your old uncle busting everyone’s chops… immaculate. Love him to death.
People taking him as a serious basketball analyst? Not so much love there
