It’s the mixture of zone and man that get confusing. If a team ran zone for 48 minutes they’d get cooked. We just notice zone more often because our default state of mind seeing defence is man to man.

I’m glad teams are embracing zones more now though, in the 10s, most teams wouldn’t ever consider it thinking it’d be easy to break just shooting 3s, but the zone defences evolved to the offences. Great to see that basketball isn’t as solved as it seemed.

Yeah, I hope more folks pay attention to your comment. It’s exactly that hybrid zone-to-man defense that is throwing things off because each team has different “rules” for when they switch. For some, it’s at a time in the shot clock, for others it is when the ball gets swung to a corner with a specific player stuck there, etc. The Rockets/Warriors series only went as long as it did because Houston found a way to do a hybrid 2-1-2 that kept Steven Adams away from the perimeter:
