Can someone try to objectively explain this level of cult like hatred seemingly every NBA fan has for the Celtics? I just never understood
People are just miserable man, can’t appreciate anything anymore it’s a sad world. And it comes with the territory of winning and Boston over the last 2 decades have done it pretty often across the major sports.
Can’t speak for everyone’s age here but sometimes I need to remind myself that the majority of people that hate on athletes online are probably like 15 on average. If it actually bothers me I need to take a step back
Social media in general is not a real place. I can almost guarantee 95% of those people hating would be on their knees asking Tatum for a picture or autograph if they saw him in real life, they would never keep that same energy.
Stepping back from sports media has been great as a Celtics fan. Last year there was nonstop shitting on the Celtics by the national media and social media even as we destroyed teams left and right. It’s like they were watching a completely different game. Shutting all that stuff out has made being a Celtics fan more enjoyable. ESPN and all of its imitators are low effort slop.
the nba reddit sub is grown ass men which is worse
Agreed, any time there is a Tatum post on r/nba I just skip it entirely. There will be no worthwhile discussion in that thread.
This is nothing compared to what the Patriots got for 20 years. They hated the Patriots so much that Tom fucking Brady got suspended for being “generally aware” for deflating footballs lmfao.
Yeah we all know that but the Pats became undeniable after having 2 dynasties in a 19 year window and Brady became the GOAT lol obviously the Tatum era Celtics aren’t sniffing that success so the hate will be more justified in their eyes.
People respect Brady tho even if they hate him. Nobody respects that guy
actual NBA players do, online weirdos and media talking heads don’t
Ok well nba players aren’t in nba subreddits so what do you expect
Miserable people are loud.
+
Miserable people hate to see the qualities in other people that they lack themselves.
=
“Tatum is corny”
It’s not as generic as “people are miserable” it’s that sports are built on manufactured rivalries and para-social delusions “my team vs. your team”
The entire machine of pro sports is driven by billionaires generating attention to their giant toys.
In the case of teams like the Celtics, there is a long history of a team being in a single spot, with generational fanbase and repeated success.
Lakers is a similar example. And no surprise that both teams are extremely hated, with LA being more globally followed as the location and history of “hollywood” branding helped it be marketed overseas.
the Celtics being from an “old” US city like Boston isn’t as marketable as Palm trees and movies and actors.
While other teams are meme-hatable. Celtics are both meme hatable and have 2 superstars who were very under rated early, got big salaries and now are targets for any time they have a down game.
Easy to hate, well known.
That’s not true. Boston sports fans are just insufferable and act like jerks as a collective lot. THAT is the reason people root against the Celtics.
LMAO if the Celtics won absolutely nothing at all no one would care about them like they were the Nets. And like I said everything is sports is negative no one appreciates anything even Lebron and Steph barely get their dues.
Tatum has won more playoff games then like 11 whole teams have.. thats where it comes from.
Part of it is the winning for sure. But Steph Curry won way more and is universally beloved.
I think a bigger part of it is his — and the entire Celtics team”s — emphasis on taking 3s. While Steph also does this, he is otherworldly at it. Tatum is not, and he’s extremely streaky. When his 3s are not falling, and he keeps jacking them up because “math” it’s just not a fun product to watch.
The Warriors, as much as I hate them, are such a fun offense to watch. So much ball movement, player movement, Curry running around screens all day. It’s an intricate offense that creates a lot of satisfying buckets. I feel like it’s such a slog for us to get an easy lay at the rim these days.
Steph was definitely hated on heavily during the early-mid part of his career, he only really escaped that once they beat us in 2022. He’s also had Draymond acting like an escaped mental patient his entire career which has funneled the hate away from him, especially over the last couple years.
If Tatum wins another ring or two and just quietly ages into his 30s still playing elite level ball, the hate will die down. He plays for Boston so it’ll never go away, but it will fade over time as he continues to silence all the arguments against him.
I’m not saying you are wrong, but I definitely don’t remember it that way. Draymond hate? No doubt. Durant hate? For sure. But Curry? Aside from people being generally sick of the Warriors winning almost every year (like the Chiefs now), what was the source of the Curry hate?
For jacking a million 3’s and genuinely changing the way basketball was played more than any other player in recent history. Also “not being able to get it done without a superteam” was common.
It wasn’t nearly as strong as Tatum but it was definitely a thing - and it was amplified by the fact that they were so dominant at the time.
Fair point on changing the game. I hate him for that too 😀. But he is the greatest of all time at that particular skill, so it’s hard to blame him for playing to his clear strength. I blame the lesser shooters, especially the Tatums of the world who can and should get to the hoop way more, for playing Steph’s game without Steph’s skill.
I don’t agree with the point about the super team. That first championship team and the 73 win team were almost all home grown. Durant joining that team changed everything of course but people mostly blame Durant for that weak move.
For a long long time, people gave Curry shit saying things like he was a front runner, a traffic cone on defense, or that he was nothing without his help (either from KD and even Klay and Draymond at one point). Hell, people were even saying none of his rings were legit because he never won FMVP. People even said Iggy deserved the FMVP over him. In retrospect these were all idiotic narratives obviously, but a LOT of people used to say this
I think it’s the way he chews on his mouthguard between plays
It’s really bizarre how much people hate him. Good person, good father, causes no drama, and has been a winner his whole career. Dude showed emotion for like the first time ever after winning a Title and people are still melting down over how ‘corny’ he was/is.
Some of it has to do with the name on the front of the jersey, but also I think people just like vocal, emotional players. It’s all a part of our WWF culture. It’s also just easier to pick on nice guys.
Good person, good father, causes no drama, and has been a winner his whole career.
There’s something about NBA fans that can’t stand players that are “boring”. Tatum isn’t a flashy player either, every time a new player with an offensive bag shows up we have to hear about how much better than JT they are, while inevitably that player fails to live up to the expectations that they all put on JT.
Someday, with hindsight they’ll see what we all know, despite his flaws this collection of talent couldn’t win like it does with most of the other “stars” in the league. There is a reason we lose when he’s cold despite all this talent “carrying” him. There’s a reason all this talent around him largely didn’t win when it mattered before getting here.
There is a reason that, despite being down 2 games and heading to New York, I’m still not worried.
I mean it’s obvious, Tatum has been hyped up since he was 19 to be great and we’ve also been saying if you look good growth each year tracks with that, but the truth is he’s not that guy.
So people who don’t care that had something shoved down their throats combined with hating Boston and you get this.
He plays for the Celtics.
Almost every thread trying to explain it I see talk about how shitty Celtics fans are as if that has anything to do with Tatum. It’s weird… I know plenty of fanbases and teams I despise but I can still respect a good player on those teams.
If the Knicks were in the conference finals every year I’d absolutely be waiting for any and every shot I could take at them
I’m sure every poster here talks a lot of shit about Josh Allen when the NFL is on lol
If Knicks fans and media (like the idiot on that video) were pushing Brunson in best in the league/MVP conversations, he’d get just as much hate. Blame Bill Simmons and his pawns.
I’m not bothered by people who hate Tatum lol bro won a title ofc people are going to hate him. It’s a good thing
It’s weird cause I think Tatum is pretty popular amongst the casual sports fan base. Like his jersey is a top seller, he’s in all these commercials and endorsements, etc. Seems like the casual fan appreciates him but when it comes to the hardcore or specific NBA fanbase is where a lot of the hate stems from.
I say it’s weird because the reasons given by the specific NBA fanbase have to do mostly off the court stuff or his personality or something not related his on court production. “Corny”, “Boring”, Lacking “Aura”, texting Kobe, etc. are reasons I expect a casual fan might give him hate for but are instead are coming from this specific NBA fanbase. Idk if you’re gonna hate or criticize him at least talk about his basketball play as to why and not only focus on his off the court stuff when he’s literally the least problematic NBA star.
I’d say 95% of r/nba are box score casuals.
I think it’s the other way around, ball heads know the value of Tatum, casuals (vast majority of basketball fans) are just there for the dumb memes and circlejerks.
Highlighting a bigger problem for the NBA, there are very few people who truly engage with the sport beyond looking at box scores, highlights and headlines.
he literally has a fucking Superman ad lol it’s just online
It’s a Boston thing. Sports media will forever be LA/NY biased. Won the chip last year, had a brilliant closeout game, and people still found a way to try and downplay it.
No different then a lot of fans here. Too many want him to be something he’s not. His big games are ignored and his bad ones always talked about.
His big games are why we are critical of his bad games, especially when his bad games come at the worst time.
He is currently the biggest star in Boston sports.
Thanks to Brady, that means haters all over the world are praying on his downfall 24⁄7. They all want to see Boston fail.
It is all rooted in intense jealousy that began over two decades now.
It’s not fair but that’s the burden he’s been given.
Shai goes 4-13 n wins by 50 “MVP he carries his team”
JT shoots anywhere near that bad and loses embarrassingly “superteam carried by his teammates”
So it’s been a really good 25 years for Boston as a sports city and that wears on people. I also think how long they’ve ‘been in the mix’ annoys other fan bases- going back to 08 Boston has been in 9 of the last 17 ecf and 6 out of the last 8. So it was the big 3, then Danny had a treasure chest of draft picks and we heard about it all the time and then just 5 years later we’re back in the ecf with a new, young team. Other fans just get tired of seeing you be a competent franchise.
Boston is THE sports city. 13 titles in 25 years with all of the teams winning means hate is going to come our way. I also think there is a belief among a lot of NBA fans that the Celtics status as a marquee franchise is undeserved. 2 titles in 39 years isn’t super impressive, and the online haters aren’t usually out of their 20s.
I think the Tatum specific hate is a little harder to gage. There is this belief that he was drafted to the perfect situation. As Celtics fans, I think we know that’s not true. After year 1, he became the situation himself. He made everything go. but because of that first year, there became an unshakable opinion that he didn’t earn his stripes.
Furthermore, because of the visibility of basketball players, fans tend to prefer more outgoing personalities. Jordan and Kobe had charisma, and were loved for it. Even LeBron struggled with acceptance from all corners of fandom until he won in Cleveland.
I’m really interested to see how the rest of Tatums career turns out, but I doubt he’ll get the respect he wants until he carries the team to the finish line again.
I believe all you said except the fact that JT wasn’t drafted to a perfect situation. Tell me a superstar in the last 5 years that was drafted to a perfect situation? He had another star next to him. He had good role players and his team was stacked with draft capitals and organization willing to give him what he needs.
I’ve said it once I’ll say it again. He’s too handsome. MJ, Lebron, Kobe, Shaq. What do they all have in common? Male pattern baldness. Tatum has a full head of hair + he’s light skinned which carries even more connotations I’m not equipped to get into.
If you are American you probably won’t understand, but the Celtics are basically like Real Madrid. Nobody like them except their fans.
Current Madrid, maybe, but there are a lot of people who loves/loved them because of the Galacticos or Ronaldo era. For me they are more Lakers, buying the biggest stars and acting like royal family surronded by their royal court. Celtics for me is more like Barcelona, having their own youngsters growing to superstars and integrating some well know (but not biggest) names, so that’s why it’s even more confusing why Celtics are hated, those should be a typical american dream of someone becoming big from zero, right? Still they don’t have a good word on us
Great player on a great team. Criticism is a Privilege held for all players that have all time great trajectory.
I’m not comparing him to these guys, but not that long ago it was LeBron, Steph and KD. This type of conversation is reserved for the best players of their generations. He’ll figure it out
Nah I had to leave that sub after last night.
They’re always really, really unfair to JB and JT but after last night, they’re just outright mean.
Not worth the mental space and I sincerely hope that JT and the rest of them can compartmentalize outside noise because… it’s loud. They’re superhuman if they can ignore it.
Because of the jersey he wears
I’m Canadian and a Celtic, Yankee, Notre Dame, Packers and Habs fan so I’m used to the hate.
Celtics and yanks is like blasphemy or something
Unfortunately, it’s like a thing.
The state of Connecticut is a diabolically screwed-up place.
Bro wtf
Just look up. We’re the greatest/winningest franchise in the league. Everybody wants to beat us and we’ll always have a target on our backs. It’s a badge of honor.
It’s a Boston thing. I love Jayson Tatum 💚
I’m a Celtics fan but also a big fan of Curry, Ant, Haliburton, Jokic. I’m a fan of basketball. That’s rare nowadays. Most people on social media don’t actually watch or like basketball
I unsubscribed from r/nba last playoff run because I was getting irrationally angry at these idiots and it’s been great for my mental health
The worst forum/sub/board/whatever the fuck you want to call it in all sports. Truly just full of people trying to make the same bad joke before some other loser does. Barely any actual ball discussion.
Seriously? They have the most championships, almost every team has a horror story from the Celtics, and people hate when a team keeps winning.
It’s why people hate the Yankees. It’s why people used to hate the Cowboys, and would hate them again if they ever won an important game. Find me a hockey fan base who roots for the Habs to have a good season.
Couple that with fans from winning fan bases are often loud mouths.
The celtics are the winningest team in the nba. Almost every fan of every team in the league has had their hopes dashed by the Celtics at some time. They will always hate us. Watch Jerry West in Celtics city.
I was upset at his play over the last 2 games, but yeah the takes I’ve seen today have been mind boggling. He just averaged like 36 in the first series, now people are calling him Paul George. It’s wild
Someone said he’s just better Tobias Harris smh
I looked at some post-game threads because there’s some catharsis to eating crow, and man, it takes all the fun out of fun shit talk when you can tell half the people in the thread are genuinely just miserable
18 banners…that’s why they hate us
It’s bc of all the memes yall. The internet pointed out all of these instances where it “appeared” like Tatum was just copying other player’s lines or celebrations. That’s all it is, it made him look cringey and unoriginal… internet being the internet.
Social media hate bubble
If they get this angry when the Cs miss 3s, imagine how silently fuming they are when the Cs are making them
I say this gently, but who gives a fuck? Honestly? They will hate anything Boston and make up reasons to justify it. The championship kind of put a giant silencer on all that BS, and life is too short to worry about what miserable people think. Let’s just enjoy having him to root for, we’re super lucky with him, JB, and DWhite.
I like to look at it like how Gilbert Arenas once said, and I’m paraphrasing: “Tatum is the face of the league. Like it or not, he gets the most hate after LeBron. That’s the face of our league.”
Is it cope? Yeah. People might just hate Boston.
Boston sports had so much success to start the decade, and the fans had so much misery before then we all became super obnoxious. If you’re from anywhere else in the US it’s easy to be a hater. And at that point it’s not even about a specific player it’s just about the jersey
It’s the same as UK here, everyone and there mother hates liverpool because of cultural and political differences which do not align with British monarchy
Idk cuz we haven’t been good enough to warrant it. It’s not like they’re the patriots or warriors
Some dude calling him the Kobe of Paul George’s that was posted to /r/nba was just diabolical. Even last year when we won the chip, Tatum was our best player throughout the playoffs and I think most Cs fans would agree, but because JB won Finals MVP they pretend like Tatum was carried the whole playoffs lol. The hate he gets is so fucking absurd.
They still act like he played terribly because he shot terribly. He did everything you can do on a court besides shoot well
As a Knicks fan with a 9 year old who still sleeps in my bed, I have deep respect for Tatum who is an alpha pro athlete champion who openly talked about sleeping in his mom’s bed until he was 13. I just thought so highly of him to offer that which I thoutht was so empowering. I immediately told my son. It takes a certain comfort and confidence that I found impressive.
All this to say, don’t know why he gets the hate. I guess people just always hate players that are on top.
I’m a huge Tatum fan. But even I can’t take any more of his whining to the refs and tendency to resort to hero ball at the worst possible times.
Its all stems from jealousy.
When you realize that it makes a whole lot more sense.
He conceals himself well and peoples lack of being able to read him puts a target on his back. Theyd rather the devil you know than the one you dont.
It turns out that hes just actually a good dude but i can see why people get the sense hes ingenuine or always trying to do the right thing. It’s very steph like. And people hate perfect people the most.
Who are the crybabies heroes?
It’s the whole Kobe wannabe stuff that gets him the hate
It’s a part of success, popular star on a championship team means everyone wants to drag you down by any means necessary
I promise it wouldn’t be at the same level if Ant or SGA win
It’s a Boston thing + a thing where most people only watch the ball when they are watching basketball and thus can only measure guys based on how much they score. When a guy like Tatum who is good at literally everything isn’t able to score one night, they only look at the shooting numbers.
If you ask on r/nba, they’ll tell you that Tatum hate is derived from Celtics fans rating him too highly. Truly one of the most colossally stupid arguments I’ve heard, makes a lot of sense that most of r/nba would stand behind it.
They really have me questioning why I’m in that sub fr. Its full of childish haters and LeBron glazers
I actually unsubbed to it today, for the first time in a long time, I think I’ve been on there since 2014 maybe? I’ve seen quite a lot of Celtics hate over there over the years (the “fake” one seed IT Celtics especially, that sub fucking sucked when we lost in 2017 and 18), but it’s never come even remotely close to what it is now.
Literally no point in mentioning anything positive about the Celtics there because these undeveloped fetuses will tell you that you’re mad and that Tatum is a choker or some other nonsense. I saw someone comment that “Jaylen Brown is the only reason JT has ever won anything” and it had 20+ upvotes…I just can’t, people are just way too fucking stupid for this sport apparently
Yeah they are proud to hate the team for anything. No point to talking to them. These people shit on Jayson more than Embiid who has never been out the second round and who whined his way to an undeserved MVP. That’s fine for them but they can’t let Jayson be happy about winning a ring.
People don’t like winning franchises.
He plays on a Boston sports team that has been in serious contention essentially every year of his career. If he played in a different market and/or on mediocre teams he’d be pretty much universally beloved.
Everyone wants the Celtics to lose
Other than the Warriors (maybe) he’s whooped the asses of like every team in the league so the haters come out whenever he plays below his standard
No one else, except maybe the Lakers and Bulls have enough history to justify a 9-episode docuseries on HBO. That’s probably why. And Lakers fans are gonna hate you too.
Celtics in 6
I used to hate the Jordan bulls with a passion during that era.
Yeah, but we went 24 years between titles.. And then 16 more years.
Simple answer: They hate us because they ain’t us.
We’re not mad. We’re just disappointed. (Cause we know how much potential he has)
The Patriots did this
It’s Boston, all of the winning that the city has seen from the big 4 has people up in arms feeling the city has won enough. Pats take up the lion’s share here, with a ton of hate on the C’s, Sox and B’s being, at least from my experience, a deeper paranoia that any of them might go on a run like the Pats did in the NFL, or a deliberate misunderstanding that all Boston teams are as dominant in their respective sports. Though I should point out that this is mostly amplified by the loudest voices on social media being, on average, criminally stupid. That said, hopefully the C’s can pull out of this tailspin
What comes with being the biggest sports star in the #1 sports city
It’s the same type of hate Lebron got early in his career. Tatum is the golden child
Success breeds jealousy. It’s not much deeper than that
It’s jealousy, simple as that. People see what they aren’t and can’t handle that he gives them nothing real to hate, so they project their own shortcomings on him. He’s insanely talented, unselfish, uncontroversial, had lots of success, is a great dad, and just happens to play on the most successful franchise in the league, all things people wish they had, so they jump on any mistake he makes, while ignoring entire games worth of good plays he makes that don’t always show up in the score sheet. Yes his shooting has been terrible, but guess what, there is not a single person in this series who has shot well, that includes “Mr clutch” on the other team. Honestly my biggest gripe with him is I wish he would be MORE selfish sometimes, but that’s just not who he is. It’s not even just other teams fans either, we are spoiled as Celtics fans because of all the greats up in the rafters, completely ignoring the fact that he’s going to be the next one up there, so instead of enjoying the ride we are trashing him mercilessly. It’s just the nature of being a fan I guess, if he rips off 35+ point games like he did against Orlando and we come back, the same people saying “trade him” today will be chanting “MVP” next week
Boston fans are fickle and can be cruel
I’d just stay radio silent from sports media until we win at least one game
“Isn’t it crazy that literally every NBA fan is insane?”
No, actually. That’s a very good description of literally all other aspects of human life atm.
Jealousy?
Our own fans have said he deserves all the hate he’s gotten. Just because of games 1 and 2 this series.
It’s not just other fans.
Im not just talking about JT or this week. This isn’t a new phenomenon
I don’t know what it is? Really? lmaooo he’s a Duke-Celtic drafted top 3 and brought a championship to one of the NBA’s founding franchises. What do you think it is 😂
They hate us cuz they anus
Simple as that
Why do people care so much? I love the hate. It fuels me.
Best team in NBA history, current champions. It’s easy to explain the hate
Best player on the best franchise - haters will hate
What did he say that was false? Like seriously, of all the guys to be mad at for low effort negative takes about Tatum, Russillo isn’t the one. He’s generally pretty fair.
Im more referring to the hate in the comments of that post
More we win more they hate.
I’m from Brasil and if you ask NBA fans here why they hate the Celtics, 80% of the time they’ll mention cases of racism from Celtics fans against NBA players. If you say that you’re a Celtics fan, there’s a good chance that the first comment you’ll hear will be “oh so you’re racist huh lol” in a joking tone, obviously. I don’t know if this opinion is the same in other Latin American countries
Other NBA fans will always feel the ghost of Bill Russel.
Some of it’s his lack of big personality, some of it is because He’s a Celtic in Boston some of it, just like Steph Curry, is because he didn’t win a finals MVP and played pretty poorly in the finals, some of it is the fact that he’s a top five player in the league and he scored like 12 points the other night in a playoff game at home. I used to defend Tatum but I’m just done. Obviously he’s talented but these cold streaks and the lack of performance in the biggest games on the biggest stage makes it exhausting trying to defend him it’s just not worth it. Hell either continue to change people’s minds or they’ll continue to break threes and it’s nothing I can change. The Celtics are stacked, he fully gets the benefit from having an off night when there’s three or four other good producers on the team. Issue is, porzingis isn’t healthy, Brown has been playing shaky, And you can’t rely on Derrick white to take over every game. We lose this next series it’s on him and Joe
The worst thing I ever hear is that he’s corny. I didn’t realize that was a carnal sin in the nba
When you have a million opinions flooding social media daily, usually the shitty ones get the most airtime. Just how the world is these days. Haters galore.
It’s magnified because we’re losing. If you’ve noticed, sports media rarely ever talk about us in a positive light even when we’re good, that’s intentional. Do you think Boston fans want to click on a video of people glazing us up and down? The views come from negativity, it’s not because they all hate us, they just want clicks and that produces clicks
Its entirely about jealousy. People hate everyone associated with Boston sports because our teams have won so much more than anywhere else. If Tatum and Anthony Edwards were flipped people would love Tatum and hate Edwards
The Celtics and Boston sports in general have been more successful than pretty much any other franchise or collection of franchises. People tend to not root for those far more successfully than them, simple as that. In the nba i think there is particular animosity given how influential boston media personal are to the greater nba discourse. If you are a fan of another team and hear your favorite podcasters constantly talk about how great the Celtics are while neglecting other teams, that can get grating after a while.
It’s obviously a Boston thing. There some individual Boston sports fans that are so annoying that it makes everyone hate us and the players we root for.
The championships. Quite simple
Imagine if there was a carnival game. Everyone competes in similar ways…but then this one person comes in and finds a cheat code. He doesn’t really play the same way…and definitely not the way it was intended. But his cheat code works and he wins…mostly. People are mad…not because he wins, but because he’s not really playing the way it was intended. Ohh but then his cheat code stops working so well! The people laugh and laugh at him!
No clue what the cheat code is an analogy to
For the record, I like Tatum, but twice in the past 3 years he’s given up home court advantage by losing the first two games at home in a playoff series.
Name another Superstar who’s done that?
people hate everything/team that’s good. literally every great nba player/franchise is hated by some
They’re jealous. Jesus was hated too.
I can think of about 18 reasons
Even though I’m a Knicks fan I actually LIKE the Celtics.
I’m of Irish descent so they were my “second team” (it’s a Brit thing) for many years. I used to watch most of their games, cheering them on. Plus I really admire many of their current team, particularly White, Holiday, Horford. All great players and seemingly good people.
But I want them to lose these days as I simply can’t stand Jaylen Brown. He takes bad shots going for personal glory, he goes out of his way to taunt opponents, he’s arrogant, entitled and an utter hypocrite (see his comments when Kyrie was accused of promoting racist videos).
I tried to get over it but I just couldn’t, so seeing Bridges simply take the ball from him (like the proverbial candy/baby scenario) to end game 1 was deeply satisfying.
So PLEASE trade Brown so I can start to cheer for the Celtics again.
Not everyone who critiques Tatum is a “hater.” Some of us just call it like we see it. He’s clearly talented, but too often he squanders that ability with questionable shot selection and inconsistency. When the game’s on the line, he tends to disappear instead of take over—and that’s why some of us don’t fully trust him in clutch moments. It’s not hate—it’s honest observation
You people are so weird. Remember when the warriors won back to back? Remember when the chiefs were winning everything? We all wanted anything but for those teams to win. Were not special. They hate us cause they aint us
This didn’t start last year. Be real
Yes it did. Maybe we weren’t the most admired team in the league but winning a chip certainly fueled the fire
They’d love him if he was on their team. It’s a Celtics thing.
Shit just read this subreddit, lot of hate for our team and Tatum going around from “Celtics” fans in here.
HATE US CUZ THEY ANUS
Gosh. Cult like hatred. Every NBA fan.
This level of attachment to a sporting team can interfere with your ability to enjoy life.
Remember that you are not the Celtics. You are not Jayson Tatum. When others criticise these things it’s not you being criticised.
And objective explanations? Good luck with that.
From my perspective I don’t hate the Celtics. I follow the Warriors. I’m not a fan of… Ja Morant acting childish. Dillon Brooks talking big then hiding after a loss. Deandre Ayton not being a competitor. Draymond Green losing his composure too frequently. Steph Curry throwing passes that get intercepted at the end of tight games.
The Celtics? I rarely watch them. I like KP. I like Derrick White, Jrue Holiday, Pritchard, Horford, Kornet. Brown and Tatum I don’t like or dislike. Solid players, but not entertainers. There are a lot of guys in the NBA who aren’t as effective at basketball but who I enjoy a lot more because of their personality and / or play style.
And I love listening to Bill Simmons, but every time he starts talking about Tatum deserving to be in the MVP conversation I roll my eyes. It’s not only Nuggets fans talking up Jokic, not only Thunder fans talking up Shai. Maybe wait for someone outside of the Celtics to start talking up Tatum, then chime in behind them.
Cause of the city they play in
Hate for Celtics is because Celtics fans are annoying. Same reason people hate the Lakers. It has nothing to do with “winning” lmao, neither the Cs nor the Lakers have been ultra successful in recent history anyway compared to other franchises.
Tatum doesn’t deserve hate, but he is slightly overrated IMO. I’ve seen so many Cs fans argue he is as good as or better than Giannis…
To be frank, as a Celtics hater, is the fans of the f franchise. We have to deal with some Celtics fans calling Tatum a top 3 player in the league and future face of the NBA while watching him Chuck up bricks.
Its bad basketball no one wants to see 5 robots play basketball.
It’s the fans. It’s your fanbase. They are the worst
No worse than Lakers fans so fuck off
He’s soft
Tatum is the most overrated player in the league it’s not even close lol
Over Embiid? If so, you’re delusional
He’s overrated. He’s basically a slightly better Allan Houston.
he does seem like a manufactured superstar, i think that’s the reason. he doesn’t play to the level he’s hyped up at. i don’t understand why a non celtics fan would care enough to hate him though. as a celtics fan, it’s very easy to be disgusted with his ways. you want to see top notch effort, not lackadasical step back 3’s ten times a game.
Sure, I can easily answer your question, but my fellow Celtics fans won’t like the actual answer. To be fair, I can’t expect the fans of the Celtics, in the Celtics subreddit, to be ok with an honest, real conversation, it’s more of a place to just be a biased fan, a sycophant. But the answer is is obvious it one takes off their green colored glasses.
Dude, let’s stop being homers for a second. He’s averaging 18 on like 40 TS through 2 home losses. The team (JB and KP especially) have also been underperforming but when you’re the face of the team you’re gonna get shit on. He has no one else to blame for this dumb media shit
This hate didn’t start this week. It isn’t new and even winning didn’t stop them
Because they are boring to watch and just jack up 3’s.
The controversy is due to when Tatum whines about not being regarded as a superstar, DESPITE the fact that he CONSISTENTLY fails to come through in the clutch. His idol was Kobe, whom Tatum worked out with, practiced with, etc. - the problem? Tatum is NOT a good one-on-one player…one-on-one he’s nowhere near as good as Paul Pierce was. Tatum’s a very good player who is excellent ONLY on those occasions when he’s willing to SHARE THE BALL - as he did in the 2024 Finals. He sure as hell ISN’T playing that way so far against the Knicks, hope he wakes up in time. Oh…and I’m not miserable or a hater…but I am frustrated.
Where’s this energy for Joel, a bum who can’t get past the second round and consistently losses to anyone at the same time of year? Somehow he’s a superstar
Just look at this sub. Their own fans hate them just as much as everyone else.
No that’s not true. The rest of the country definitely hates more haha
This sub is no different than any team sub. When they win they are the fucking greatest when they lose it’s fire everyone on the team that makes me sad. Same as it ever was.
Yet if you ask someone, as I have, they say “i hate him because Celtics fans all overrate him”.
Can’t be both
I’m looking at this sub not your random street encounters with strangers
I see that in the comments of the post I shared. Who said anything about street encounters?
They are held accountable not hated. You don’t know the difference?
I think the overwhelming calls to fire various individuals is pathetic and it’s absolutely self loathing hatred. Yeah I know the difference I’m just not a dickriding victim of self recency bias
It’s the fan base that people can’t stand. same with the Patriots. The fan base gloats and flaunts the championships so much in other people‘s faces that it makes people actually hate the team too..
I simply don’t see that happening. We are not running through basketball sub Reddits bragging about the 08 chip. We barely “brag” about last year
really? where do you live Antarctica? i’m a Celtics fan but no franchise his milked a championship like the ‘O8 team. I am one of the obnoxious fans who will send pictures of the 18 banners to my laker fan friends just to shut them the fuck up. when people show up to sporting events here in Boston, wearing other cities jerseys, we will boo them up and down the aisles. it’s just a culture here.
If that’s the case Chicago would be the most hated for the 85 Bears that are still flaunted everyday. You don’t know what you’re talking about
He was the greatest winner of his generation until this humiliating Knicks series. It’s mostly jealous fans of opposing teams or teams he burned.
Knicks 2 games*** yall are talking like our season is over lmfao
Coming off averaging like 35 against Orlando btw
Humiliating 2 games. The series is not over.
Jaylen brown is our best player
