OKC has like 2 years before it has to start making tough decisions just like the Celtics are going to have to.

They will have to continue to hit on picks or trades and thats hard, miss a couple and suddenly your roster depth is a lot thinner.

That would require the NBA to collectively overcome the old “it only takes one sucker” adage. Going by the entire history of the NBA, I wouldn’t count on that happening.

I think what fans want is (1) to even out the intrinsic financial advantages big market teams have, and (2) to prevent the construction of artificial superteams via mercenary free agency signings and forced trades.

I don’t think anyone wants small market (or even big market) teams to be punished for being effective at developing homegrown talent via the draft and finding diamonds in the rough, and for making smart trades.

i.e. I don’t think it’s about equity of outcome but rather equity of opportunity. I think it’s a popular sentiment that teams should absolutely be rewarded for building their roster “the right way.”

The Brunson contract situation is almost universally oversimplified. He didn’t leave any money on the table at the time of contract signing. What he did was choose to re-sign for his max early rather than waiting to re-sign when his max would be higher. While that choice has obvious team-building ramifications, it’s also justifiable from a purely selfish financial perspective (get the bag now vs risking a major injury).

Considering what teams out west are doing it’s actually true.  OKC is incredibly deep, San Antonio is about to be a juggernaut behind Wemby and the army of draft picks they have, Minnesota is showing they can get crazy production from anyone (or maybe the Lakers defense was trash, still unclear).  By the time you get to the finals those fresh legs off the bench matter.

Like if you have to trade multiple picks to get off Jrue, but with Brown you get back picks and players, then trading Brown probably makes more sense. I’d rather have Jrue + good players + picks over Brown - picks.

Quickest coaches to be fired in the last 30 years is what, Mike Budenholzer and Michael Malone? 2 years after they won a championship they were gone. And Malone was issues with the GM, kind of like the whole Phil Jackson Jerry Krause debacle and they just cleaned house. Budenholzer had a legitimately horrible series and his brother died and probably wanted the time off anyway.

If the Celtics lose to the Knicks, Mazzulla has about 1 year to right the ship. If they’re moving in a direction they don’t like, I could see it after 2026, but not this year. I’m not sure it’s on the table right now. People wanted him fired after 2023 too and then they won a championship last year. I don’t think they’ll be so knee jerk reactive to what’s happening
