[Highlight] Boston challenges the jumpball call in crunch time, but comes out worse-off as the ruling is out off Derrick White’s head
This has been quite possibly the worst reffed game I’ve ever witnessed.
That 8 second or backcourt violation right after was hilarious as well. Refs throwing the dice on calls.
Went from paolo scrambling in the backcourt to a clean inbound smh
played perfect defense and somehow got off worse smh
And then put no time back on the clock
LITERALLY would not give the Celtics a SHOT. In what world is that not at least 0.6? Commentators were guessing 0.8. Fuckin insane
But they just stopped the game and went to replay in Lakers Wolves in the first quarter cause the refs couldn’t decide which person was fouled to shoot free throws.
But can’t look at the end of game call when they clearly fucked up
Should’ve put .5 on the clock oh well
Genuine question: how much worse could the average nba fan be? I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be much worse than whatever the fuck is happening rn
They’d be so much worse even if I don’t have faith in refs I have even less in the average fan.
You have to actually know the rules to ref the game, the average fan would be way over their head and the players would get really mad about how badly they ran a game
so much? They would be worse for sure, but this game has actually been so bad I’m not sure it would be much different
You know damn well it’s difficult to call this in real time
I know damn well I wouldn’t have called that half court violation
And I know damn well you’d have no idea what is or isn’t a foul real time being on the court because it’s still a hard fuckin job, the incompetency of this just tells me yeah, you prolly would one day because the average fan would be garbage at it and thinks they know more than they do.
The Venn diagram of Redditors who think they could competently ref an NBA game and those who think they could score in an NBA game is a full circle. These casual delusions of grandeur
Seriously, be a hater, fine, but have some goddamn common sense still, just shit on the calls but don’t pretend you know more than them.
Excuse you. If I cherry picked for 48 minutes a game for a full season, I’d get at least one transition bucket due to my teammates.
Please go volunteer and ref a kids game then come back to us.

Would be horrible at real time calls, but would be vastly superior reviewing replays and noticing obvious things like the clock needing to be adjusted on the last play of a playoff game.
Biggest problem with these refs is their ego.
Yeah and the average fan wouldn’t have ego? Lmao, yeah I’m sure some random fan bein challenged on their call is free of ego, an enlightened being. I mean christ all of these comments just screams “fans think they know more than they do” they don’t.
Reffing is really fucking hard. You have every player and coach bitching and arguing. Yet you need to remain focused and impartial while making on the fly decisions in a fast paced game. I’ve done rec league shit and it’s awful. I don’t understand how anyone is into reffing. It makes me hate sports.
The average fan would have trouble calling a high school game. NBA speed would be entirely out of the question. The only legit replacement options would be G-League and D1 refs, and that would still be noticeable.
Dude… it’s SO hard. I’ve reffed some high school ball in a country that doesn’t even produce the kinds of athletes that are playing it in America and THAT felt about as fast as the game could get before I’d struggle to process stuff in real time.
Put me on an NBA game and I’m probably going to look concussed out there within 2 minutes.
That was clear as day over the line in real time too. I was excited for the call but knew it didn’t make sense
people joke the NBA tries to extend series for commercials but this game actually looks like it
No like I know i’m a Boston fan, but actually what the fuck is this?
It’s been shocking and now they just added another trash call with that backcourt violation called on Paolo after a Tatum strip.
No a performance like this would get any person fired from their job. Between the inconsistencies in reffing and these puzzling calls, these refs cannot get another playoff assignment
i half expected that to be a makeup call or the past two jump balls lol
Insane inadvertent whistle!
3 hour regulation game 💀
It’s possible for refs to get the yips.
I can say this statement every season it feels like and have it be true.
Must’ve confused White’s head for the ball
Head ass, b
Technically if the call gets overturned it should still be a successful challenge, right?
The rule seems to be if it ends up being worse for you, it counts as a loss.
I think if the result is negative for your team you lose it. Earlier the Magic challenged an out of bounds and it got overturned to a foul on them and they lost their challenge
challenge feature is good. but if it goes to the challenger’s way, they should have another challenge added. so 2 in all. can be max of 3 perhaps.
this is to compensate refs not making the right call.
Give them 1, then if they are right, 2 more. If both are right, 4 more. Etc. If you get enough right you get to challenge basically every call.
Every year, coach who gets the most challenges right in one game wins the Ackshually Award and a bonus of $100k. Ref who has the most calls overturned in one game has their organs harvested to pay for the bonus
They do get a second if the first is successful
but it’s still just 1. i meant, if it’s successful, the total would be 2 challenge options available.
they do get a second challenge if the first one is successful
What
That’s how it works. If you challenge and are successful you get another challenge and retain the timeout you used to challenge.
ohhh my mistake then. ✌️ thanks gor the correction man.
I don’t think there should be a limit. If they’re worried about game times, make it quicker or make refs make the correct calls. Teams shouldn’t be penalized because the refs made too many errors against you.
Yeh I’m curious what the rule there is
This is what I thought when the Magic challenged and got the proximate foul instead. Wouldn’t that be a successful challenge too?
I think that definitely used to be the case, although this is the only example I can remember and I guess technically you could argue challenging to save your player from a foul even if it then goes to his teammate is success?
Now it seems that even if you were right about the thing you challenged, if something else is discovered and you “lose” the play overall, your challenge is considered unsuccessful. Maybe there’s a hierarchy of calls and obviously foul against you would be worse than OOB against you so maybe that’s why it’s unsuccessful.
In the Celtics scenario OOB against you is worse than an incorrect jump ball call or something.
I’m not sure if I agree with that interpretation but whatever. My logic is that a challenge is you saying “I don’t think that call was right”, not “I don’t think that call was right and this is what I think it should be” and your “should be” becomes the defining factor on whether it’s successful or not even if your “not right” was correct
Mission failed successfully
Technically
Same thing happened to the magic in the first half
It should be if we are going to allow a foul to suddenly be called.
How was that not a foul? Elbow across the head as he goes over the top of him.
That’s literally why it hit White’s head. WCJ rocked his head forward with the elbow and then pelted it with the ball. Clean play.
I was at a bar so couldn’t hear the review, even as a Magic fan I’m like, how wasn’t that a foul, it was obvious
This doesn’t even show the foul right before where Carter tackled porzingus to cause that loose ball
I honestly had no idea there would be no consequences for just pelting an opposing player in the head with the ball, I feel like this should be utilized more.
It’s pretty funny actually, falling out of bounds and you’re free to hammer the ball off someone’s head. Standing mid court and you do it, it’s probably a flagrant because it’s not a basketball play. I wonder though, if there is a team mate behind the person you pelt, can you claim it’s an attempted pass and therefore a basketball play?? I’m really intrigued by this.
Yes, you’ve never seen the Giannis/Harden fastball to face connection? Perfectly legal as long as you have some plausible deniability
https://youtu.be/4aP8KRq2tkg?si=w-zaGW-aDdUiwSMY
Holy shit i had to watch that like 5 times. Then to get it back and pick up an assist 🤣
im fuckin dying holy shit it’s some real quality 🤣
From one mvp to another had me rolling
Lmao damn he drilled him
JUST THE WAY THEY DREW IT UP
Giannis famously did it to Harden lol, I can’t say for sure it was intentional but it sure looks like he just yeets that motherfucker at his face.
Have you ever watched a basketball game before? Of course you can throw a ball at an opponent falling out of bounds? What could possibly be wrong with that?
Have you ever read a comment before? They were clearly saying throwing it specifically at their head, as that’s obviously a foul anywhere else on the court.
This head ref has been showing up way too much, starting to think he’s not very good
This officiating should be hanged for treason against the nba
NBA continues to embarrass itself and they wonder why the ratings are down.
I despise the Celtics. and these calls are terrible… then they didn’t add time at the end either.
Randomly stopped the game for a “back court violation”
I was livid at the end of the game and it had nothing to do with the result. The league and the refs just put on full display to the entire country that they have absolutely zero respect for the game of basketball, all they give a fuck about is money. So absurdly disgusting and vile to watch these turbo clowns fuck up call after call with absolutely no repercussions whatsoever. This is my favorite sport and the only one I still actively follow, but it is actively infuriating to watch (for any given pair of teams, as a fan or a neutral) when they do this shit. And it’s shockingly common these days. Al Horford staring in disbelief and screaming “IT’S THE PLAYOFFS!” after getting whistled for playing tight defense trying to contest a potential fumbled catch really sums up the whole experience.
bruh
His foot couldnt be any more clearly on the floor while still holding the ball, how is this even possibly the right call
It hit whites head while he was out of bounds.
After his head got bashed 3 inches lower?
And his feet were out of bounds and his hands were touching the ball
Why is one person getting priority on touching the ball over the other? They were both out of bounds touching the ball
I didn’t catch it live, is that right foot out of bounds? If not, it looks like the ball isn’t touching him anymore when his left foot comes down
Yes, it was the right foot that was out of bounds.
white had a hand on the ball while he was out of bounds and banchero was in the air.
If this game was called correctly the magic would have no eligible players, they foul and hack every second of every possession, this is not basketball
I wish it was called that way for everyone. that would be basketball imo. Improves pacing, less stop/ads/start although I suppose it may be designed that way for advertisement sake.
Hliariously bad reffing the whole game but the last 2 minutes was hard to watch.
Am I crazy or is this not out of bounds on Paolo???
100%
how the fuck is an out of bounds a jump ball in the first place?
It defaults to the jump ball when the refs claim they don’t know who the ball last touched before going out of bounds. Which is hilarious because we’ve all seen them clearly guess at times or claim they saw when they weren’t at the right angle to actually see who it last touched.
That one dude on the Celtics straight up looks like Bat Boy.
leave Jordan Walsh out of this
That “inadvertent” whistle really hurt. Went from Orlando scrambling and at risk of turning it over to getting a side out with a bit added the on the shot clock.
This sub is a nightmare
Pretty obvious proximate foul, why didn’t they call it? Makes no sense
“obvious”
You don’t think that’s a foul lol? Going through the back of someone’s head to get the ball?
I said they would call that as a joke and then they actually did.
You’re giving Orlando the ball because Carter (who has possession) hit White in the head with the ball when White’s foot is on the line?
Forget questioning if this was a foul. Doesn’t this dude have his right foot planted out of bounds before he lets go of the ball?
Edit: Grammar
What being Jason Kidd does to a mfer
Off Derek White’s satellite!
You might say that was a really heads up play.
Wtf was that Charlie Villanueva?
NBA Officials: Fuck Overrated Derrick White
Operation: Series Extendo
F around and find out
Read this as cut off Derrick Whites Head
heads up play
I was so certain they were at least gonna get the ball, then when I saw Derick whites big bald head smooching that ball with his foot on the line , had to get another beer.
NBA reffing is such a joke bro. Can’t even enjoy playoff basketball..
Lol White got a big ole head
Orlando should be up 2-1 in this series
