They got 1 first trading for Al Horford and then another for trading him away. They pulled similar deals for Schroeder and Gallinari

Also compounded our mistake by dumping him and LaRavia. Season probably wouldn’t have gone off the rails if we had just held those guys. LaRavia for his play and Smart was like literally the only veteran presence in the locker room.

Yeah but that’s exactly the issue.

Philadelphia brought him in to space the floor and share the court with Simmons and Embiid. It was a fundamental misunderstanding of his game. He’s an elite 4th/5th best shooter on the floor and a pretty weak 2nd/3rd best.

If you watched Horford back then you’d know he had slow shooting mechanics and only shot when he was very wide open. He was a good 3PT shooting big man, at a time when big men were still making that transition into perimeter play.

You’d also know he was one of the most versatile and high big men in the league when it came to screen actions (PnRs, PnPs, DHOs). He could shoot, but he was really only shooting to punish defenders in screen actions.

Meanwhile Philadelphia took away his screen actions and tried to make him a spot up shooter because someone clearly looked at him averaging 38% from 3 in Boston and didn’t investigate any further.

That’s why Horford shooting 33.6% for Boston in 2021-22 looked better than Horford shooting 35.0% for Philadelphia in 2019-20. Our organisation actually understood his game and made it work.

It’s a hallmark of incompetent franchises. They never seem to look at guys closely or try to understand why a player might be succeeding or struggling.

And even your comment talking about him only shooting 35% now. He’s actually been a much better shooter during his 2nd tour with Boston than his 1st. The difference between a 35% shooter and a 40% shooter over 5 attempts is only 0.25ppg. Horford now shoots a lot more confidently, a lot quicker and on a higher volume than he used to.

Our defensive scheme that helps a lot and tries to “let” the worst 3 point shooter on a team take an open 3 doesn’t work against good teams like the Celtics that don’t have a weak 3 point shooting link. Sometimes you can see things improve quickly and get a bounce. Kings got hot at the beginning of Doug Christie’s coaching. And you could tell Rudy Fernandez was doing a good job game 1 of this season.
